Exclusive: Annabelle: Creation Opens Today and There’s a Very Cool Easter Egg in the Film!

Today marks the official release of David F. Sandberg’s Annabelle: Creation (review), the prequel to the 2014 Conjuring spinoff film. Following the creation of the Annabelle doll and the events that led to her possession, the film takes viewers to the early 20th century, bringing the Conjuring universe to its earliest point so far. For those who are going to see the movie, we highly recommend that you stay throughout the entirety of the credits for a fun little surprise at the end!
We’re going to reveal a potential spoiler with this article, so if you want to avoid that, you can exit out now. For those who wish to know what the headline is referring to, head on further down below to read about something pretty damn cool, at least in my eyes!
David F. Sandberg directs from a screenplay by Gary Dauberman, who also wrote Annabelle. The film stars Stephanie Sigman (Spectre), Talitha Bateman (The 5th Wave), Lulu Wilson (Ouija 2, Deliver Us from Evil), Philippa Coulthard (After the Dark), Grace Fulton (Badland), Lou Lou Safran (The Choice), Samara Lee (Foxcatcher, The Last Witch Hunter), and Tayler Buck in her feature film debut, with Anthony LaPaglia (“Without a Trace”) and Miranda Otto (“Homeland”, the Lord of the Rings trilogy).
Annabelle: Creation has been rated R by the MPAA for horror violence and terror. It comes out in theaters today.

Okay, so what’s this cool easter egg that we’re referring to, you ask? In the film, there’s a point where we see a large demonic creature terrorizing those in the Mullins’ home. That demon is played by none other than Joseph Bishara, who composed the music for The Conjuring, its sequel, the Insidious films, 11-11-11, Dark Skies, and The Other Side of the Door. But what also makes this so fun is that Bishara was the lipstick demon in Insidious, Bathsheba in The Conjuring, and played a demon in both Annabelle and The Conjuring 2!
I got the chance to chat with Bishara for a brief moment about his portrayal of the demonic entity in Annabelle: Creation and his connection to this universe of The Conjuring, and he told me, “It really is a privilege to get to perform these demons, to work with directors in a different capacity than music, and seeing the scenes grow and evolve from the inside. And very inspiring to work directly with such highly talented makeup effects artists and stunt teams to realize the creatures and scares.”
Talking about how this film felt different from others that he’s been a part of, Bishara states, “Annabelle: Creation was the first film I performed a creature in that I didn’t also score, and it had a different sense of immediacy since with the double duty of performing and scoring, after wrap there’s still a long way to go.”
At the end of the day, Bishara seems very happy with his place in this universe. “For whatever reason playing these demons seems to be a very natural fit.”
The idea that James Wan is crafting a universe around The Conjuring, its characters, and the paranormal events that Ed and Lorraine Warren dealt with is clearly not just centered around interwoven films. Having Bishara play a demonic entity in Creation, just as he did in The Conjuring films and Annabelle, is something that put a huge smile on my face because it really does feel like Wan has created a family with this endeavor and everyone’s invited to this horror experience!
