One of our most anticipated short films of this year is the directorial debut of former editor-in-chief of Rue Morgue magazine, Jovanka Vuckovic, “The Captured Bird”, and today she posted several behind-the-scenes photos from the first day of shooting along with an update on the project.

Here’s what Vockovic had to say on Twitter about her progress thus far: “Day one was a huge success! Two more to go.

Synopsis:
“The Captured Bird” is a darkly poetic fable that begins with a little girl drawing figures of people with chalk on the cement of a playground. She takes notice of an unusual crack in the pavement that is seeping a mysterious black fluid, which she follows to an ominous building. Inside, she encounters several bizarre phenomena, including walls that bleed black and tentacles that emerge from the ceiling to touch her. She then witnesses the birth of five terrifying supernatural beings that threaten the existence of her world.

“The Captured Bird”, starring Skyler Wexler, has already been accepted, even before being shot, to the prestigious Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, Mexico’s Morbido Film Fest, the UK’s Sheffield Horror Film Festival, LA’s Viscera Film Festival, The Boston Underground Film Festival, Edmonton’s DEDfest and Colorado’s Telluride Horror Show. Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas and the Toronto After Dark Film Festival, among others, have also already shown interest. Given writer/director Vuckovic’s and executive producer Guillermo del Toro’s combined pedigree in the horror industry, the film will no doubt play the majority of international genre film festivals.

Thelma Is Fantastic and Now You Can Watch the Opening Scene

Published

on

One of this year’s most beautiful and subdued horror films is Joachim Trier’s Thelma (review), which opens in Los Angeles tonight. To give you a bit of what the film is like, The Orchard have released the opening scene, which shows a man and his daughter hunting in the bleak Norwegian winter. When they come across a young deer, the true intentions of this trip become apparent…

Having seen Thelma, I can tell you that it’s truly something special. It’s a slow burn, to be certain, but it plays out gorgeously, resulting in a film that has yet to leave my mind.

Locations and tickets for Thelma can be found here.

Synopsis:
Thelma, a shy young student, has just left her religious family in a small town on the west coast of Norway to study at a university in Oslo. While at the library one day, she experiences a violent, unexpected seizure. Soon after, she finds herself intensely drawn toward Anja, a beautiful young student who reciprocates Thelma’s powerful attraction. As the semester continues, Thelma becomes increasingly overwhelmed by her intense feelings for Anja – feelings she doesn’t dare acknowledge, even to herself – while at the same time experiencing even more extreme seizures. As it becomes clearer that the seizures are a symptom of inexplicable, often dangerous, supernatural abilities, Thelma is confronted with tragic secrets of her past, and the terrifying implications of her powers.
