U.S. Trailer Debut – John Carpenter’s The Ward

Post Thumb:

Finally the wait is over. The official U.S. trailer for John Carpenter’s The Ward has been released, and we have every single second of it right here for your horror-loving head to ingest! Check it out!

John Carpenter’s The Ward will be available on VOD on June 8th, 2011, and in theatres July 8th, 2011. Lyndsy Fonseca, Amber Heard, Danielle Panabaker, and Jared Harris star.

The Ward is an intense psychological thriller set in a mental institution where a young woman, Kristen, is haunted by a mysterious and deadly ghost. As danger creeps closer, she comes to realize that this ghost might be darker than she could have imagined.

Kristen, who is in her early 20’s, wakes to find herself bruised, cut, drugged, and held against her will in a remote ward of Chamberlain Psychiatric Hospital. She is completely disoriented with no idea why she was brought to this place and no memory of her life.

The other patients in the ward, four equally troubled girls, offer no answers, and Kristen quickly realizes things are not as they seem. The air is heavy with secrets, and at night, when the hospital is dark and foreboding, she hears strange and disturbing sounds. It appears they are not alone.

One by one the girls disappear, and Kristen must find a way out of this hellish place before the ghost comes for her, too. As she struggles to escape, she will uncover a truth far more dangerous and horrifying than anyone could have imagined.

Am I the only JC fan having a hard time getting excited for this? Carpenter is one of my all time favorite film makers, but he hasn’t made a truly great movie since In The Mouth of Madness (although Vampires is a fun romp and Cigarette Burns was the best episode of Masters of Horror IMO).

And the trailer looks like your generic thriller, and most reviews of the film have pretty much confirmed that there really isn’t anything interesting or special going on here here.

Still, I’ll give it a shot since I’m always rooting for JC and I’m tired of being an apologist when I explain why I’m such a big fan.

I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt. The only bad film (and it still has some well done elements) he has ever made was Ghosts of Mars. True a few others weren’t great but unlike Craven he has never descended into crap.

I feel like pinching myself just to confirm that I’m not dreaming. The trailer looks kinda weak, but this is JC we’re talking about. Therefore I cannot pass this film up. My expectations are in check though. As long as it ain’t Ghosts of Mars bad, I’m cool with it.
