Recently Dread caught up exclusively with filmmaker Charlie Vaughn (director of Bloody Mary 3D) and in this capacity actor in regard to his current turn as ‘Jeffery’ in the now shooting cannibal-slasher flick Wonder Valley. Read on for a first look at ocular candy featuring star Suziey Block and a teaser poster from the indie production.

Helmed by first-time feature director Joseph Monahan, whose background lies in specialty photography (he was responsible for the rig that rendered that hammer POV in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor), Wonder Valley was shooting Day Five last evening in the deserts of Joshua Tree, California. Written by Monahan (who also executive produces), Kenny White and producer Creep Creepersin, the narrative follows a quartet of vacationers who unfortunately find their numbers start to dwindle during their ill-conceived trip in purportedly unexpected and unsurprisingly rather bloody ways. Along with Vaughn and Block, rounding out the cast are Natalie Pero (Bloody Mary 3D) and David Michaelson, with makeup effects provided by Jacky Belle (Hinnon Valley).

It’s been very bloody down here!” Vaughn told us of the shoot as he drove with actress Block from their desert cabin location to the Motel 6 base-camp location which production had secured, which resided fifteen minutes away down a reportedly rough track.

Suziey is covered head-to-toe in blood, and we need to clean her up for the rest of the scenes tonight,” Vaughn expounded. “It’s been very bloody so far, and Jacky’s effects have been incredibly gory and realistic.”

Dread queried Vaughn regarding what unique angle Wonder Valley may bring at this point to the now familiar ‘vacation trip gone awry’ sub-genre of horror, to which he replied, “There is a plot twist, as most horror or thriller movies tend to have. Hopefully it will be one of those movies where the second time you see it, it will be as enjoyable as the first time in that the first time you won’t be expecting the plot twist reveal, and the second time around it’ll take on a whole new meaning as it pertains to the characters’ relationships. I think in that respect it’s what I would refer to as a ‘Trojan Horse’.

Shooting on the Red camera system, “The shots I have seen so far look ‘postcard’ picture perfect,” said Vaughn, “and because Joe’s background is in cinematography, he has some really cool rigs and some really unique shots, which you generally don’t see in micro-budget horror movies such as this.

As for whether they’ve been making their days, they have according to the actor, although, “Last night we had fifty-mile-per-hour winds,” said Vaughn, “which made filming outside nearly impossible, and during one of the blood gags, one of the actors spit towards one of the cameras, which slowed us down a bit, so we shot until the sun came up. So today we are shooting until it is done!

For more info keep up with the flick on the Wonder Valley Facebook page.
