Trailer and Poster Released for Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water

The first trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming film The Shape of Water has just come online and it looks like an imaginative wonderland. Something about the presentation reminds me of Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s The City of Lost Children. There is a beautiful, magical quality that permeates throughout every frame. I have a sneaking suspicion that I am going to openly weep during this film.
Additionally, a stunningly gorgeous poster has been released and can be seen below. The blue-toned image shows a woman embracing what appears to be the Creature from the Black Lagoon. The art was done by James Jean.
Del Toro has been quick to note that although The Shape of Water has been rated R for “sexual content, graphic nudity, violence and language“, this is NOT a horror film, writing, “The Shape of Water is NOT a horror movie. It’s a bit of a fairy tale story – a fable set in early 1960’s America.”
The film stars Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, Richard Jenkins, Michael Shannon, Doug Jones, and Michael Stuhlbarg. It swims into theaters on December 8th.
Synopsis:
From master storyteller Guillermo del Toro comes The Shape of Water – an other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of silence and isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment.
