Remembering George A. Romero by Leigh Whannell

George Romero did so many things first… but most valuable to me was that he was the first one who showed us that horror could be fiercely independent, socially conscious and terrifying all at the same time.

Whenever a young horror filmmaker somewhere breaks out a camera and starts shooting a horror film on the smell of an oily rag with only serious passion as fuel, that filmmaker has Romero’s blood in their veins. Even if they don’t know it.

James Wan and I certainly did when we made Saw. That is a debt that every independent, low budget horror filmmaker owes to George – blood. He found the treasure and buried it – the rest of us pirates are merely trying to dig it up and claim a piece for ourself.
