Remembering George A. Romero by Adam Gierasch

I loved George Romero. They used to play The Crazies on WPIX which was the only New York City station we got in my hometown of Ithaca. And I watched it every single time it came on. I saw Knightriders the day it opened and I almost orgasmed when Dawn Of The Dead played at Cornell University cinema.

He was one of the first independent horror filmmakers that truly had an impact on the mainstream. And I’m not even mentioning the fact that he single-handedly invented zombies as we know them today. I loved Martin, I loved Creepshow and I love the way he worked left-wing politics into horror without being pretentious about it.

For a long time he was my favorite director period! He’s one of the filmmakers that made me who I am today (and I don’t mean I will ever be as good as he was). RIP George, you will be missed.
