Can Pirates Plunder Our Genre?

Low budget pirate-themed horror movies suddenly became a niche subgenre following the release of the Pirates of the Caribbean flicks. They’ve also been almost all universally terrible. Now another will be coming to DVD on September 11th when Lionsgate releases Pirates of Ghost Island. Am I alone in thinking that title makes this sound like some sort of pirate flick aimed at the kiddy market? Pirates of Ghost Island sounds like the title of a Goosebumps book, doesn’t it?
“Six young friends throwing a graduation party at sea find themselves shipwrecked on an uninhabited island following an unexpected storm. The island appears to be desolate, but when one of them is kidnapped before dawn, the terrified friends realize they are not alone. They are soon forced to battle for their lives with the Pirates of Ghost Island, a terrorizing colony of bloodthirsty swashbucklers who have haunted these beaches for over 200 years.”
So I found the Pirates of Ghost Island website digging around the Internet and watched the trailer. I again found myself thinking this looks like a pirate movie aimed toward kids, but then the blood and gore began filling the screen. Has Lionsgate begun picking up Brain Damage Films’ sloppy seconds?
Folks, unless my eyes deceived me, I’d swear I saw a World War 2 Japanese samurai also getting in on the ghostly pirate massacre action.
I’m amazed no one has made a pirate-themed slasher flick called Slashbuckler yet. Get me York Entertainment on the phone!
