The Witch Composer Mark Korven On the Apprehension Engine Instrument

Composer Mark Korven terrorized audiences last year with his haunting score for The Witch (review), the critically acclaimed horror film from A24. His ability to marry traditional instruments with terrifying sonic landscapes resulted in one of the most effective horror scores of the year, one that has been lauded, deservedly so, by many.

A new video from the YouTube channel Great Big Story dives into Korven’s work by focusing on a one-of-a-kind instrument that he had commissioned, which he calls “The Apprehension Engine”. Created by luthier Tony Duggan-Smith, the instrument offers multiple possibilities that each have the ability to create spine-chilling tones.

It’s a fascinating video that is only a few minutes long, so it’s well worth your time.
