Actor Michael Jai White has made a career of being a badass. He first hit Hollywood’s radar with his performance as the one and only Mike Tyson for the HBO series based on the troubled boxer’s early years. But what may surprise you, dear readers (it did me!), is that White’s first acting gigs were actually in our beloved genre as he played a minor role in both The Toxic Avenger II and III.
Since then, not only has he become the first African-American actor to portray a comic book hero in a major motion picture (Spawn), White also went head to head with Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight as one of Gotham’s crimelords, Gambol. In 2009 he penned and starred in the blaxploitation flick (and Sundance hit) Black Dynamite and somehow still found time to maintain a steady career as both a serious actor and a professional martial artist.
Now White is set to kick some ass on your computer with the upcoming Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series, which debuts on April 12th on gaming network Machinima’s YouTube channel.
Dread Central recently had the opportunity to speak one-on-one with White during the press day for Mortal Kombat: Legacy in Los Angeles to talk about his experiences with bringing Mortal Kombat’s Major Jackson “Jax” Briggs to life, White’s thoughts on the potential for a feature film version of the web series, and what’s going on with the upcoming animated series adaptation of Black Dynamite that was recently picked up by Cartoon Network as part of its Adult Swim block of programming.
Check out our video interview with White below, and make sure to check out Mortal Kombat: Legacy when it premieres April 12th at Machinima on YouTube.
