Horror documentaries: we do love them for the majorities’ erudite chronicling of minutia. But what if there were a series that did so, much in the same way that you probably do, on a Saturday night in the company friend,s with a 12-pack, and a stack of vintage horror flicks you’re just itching to stick into the Blu-ry player? It’s here, and it’s called The Horror Geeks.

Behind the concept is Los Angeles producer Barry Morgan, who is actively shopping the horror-comedy television series with fellow producers Richard King, Josh and Sierra Russell, and John KD Graham, as, “A show by horror fans, for horror fans.”

Starring Sarah Nicklin (Exhumed, Nun of That), Carlee Baker (Lucky McKee’s The Woman, “Robot Chicken”), Jose Prendes and Andy Maiorano, The Horror Geeks revolves around a quartet of film fans who bond over their love of everything horror, engaging in debate, debauchery, and death. Post production on the series twenty-two minute pilot is now complete.

“Each show revolves around a certain topic, such as a horror franchise, sub-genre, or special effects legend,” series creator and producer Morgan explained. “Episodes begin with our cast discussing and debating the chosen topic in a roundtable setting, followed by going on an adventure in the field relating to the topic, where they invariably and often comically find themselves in real-life horror situations.”

Regarding his cast, Morgan stated, “Well, it definitely helps that they are all true horror geeks! We all come from the indie world, which was great because the bond between cast, crew, and creative on indie projects is such a beautiful thing, especially when you’re dumping blood on people, eating a home cooked meal that the location host is kind enough to provide, and chopping off heads. Speaking directly to the cast of the show, Sarah, Carlee, Jose, and Andy are such great people and amazing talents. I felt very lucky to work with them, and I look forward to continuing our relationship once the show goes to series!”

“As horror fans, many of us never imagined that television would become such a fertile ground for the genre as it has,” continued Morgan. “However, for me what is lacking is a show that celebrates the genre. For the pilot episode, I thought, ‘What better franchise to focus on than Friday the 13th?’”

“When I mapped out a full season, as well as the series,” he expounded, “It became clear to me pretty early on that featuring franchises would only be a once-per-season thing. While I love the franchises, I decided that the more intriguing approach would be to focus on topical subject matter, such as sub-genres of themes that defined a decade. For instance, some of the topics I have planned out for season 1 include, Possession & Demons, Australian Horror, 90’s Teen Screams, and everyone’s favorite topic, Sex in Horror.”

Although the show does focus on horrific material (you know, those promiscuous camp counselors who allowed that little mongoloid zombie to drown – for shame!), it also takes a comedic angle, akin in ways to AMC’s “Comic Book Men,” with planned episodes featuring a variety of cut-aways: practical jokes, neurotic VHS collectors, trivia contests, sketch comedy, faux movie trailers and television infomercials, and horror-themed competitions.

“When I was growing up in the 1980’s, horror was fun,” Morgan explained. “So, when developing the series, I wanted to stay away from critical and over-analytical perspectives and concentrate on the aspects fans enjoy. It sounds strange to many people, but the horror genre makes horror fans smile a lot more than it makes them scream. And that’s what I want to do with this – make people smile.”
