RoboCop Reboot Right on Track

The lion is getting ready to roar once again with a half cyborg crime-fighter and the prospect of a remake done right. Will the new RoboCop bring all of the over-the-top violence of the original? We can only hope.

According to Deadline MGM is negotiating with Brazilian director Jose Padilha to direct RoboCop, the remake of the futuristic 1987 film originally helmed by Paul Verhoeven.

The original was about a cop who was near death and was drafted to become a powerful cyborg cop, until suppressed memories of his past life come back to haunt him. Peter Weller played the character in the original and the 1990 sequel.

All we know? We want more of this drippy fellow below! More soon!

Hm, this gives me some hope. ‘Elite Squad’ was an awesome picture; so it might turn out pretty good.

Nothing will come close to Verheoven’s film. Nothing. It’s one of my five favorite films and I have no confidence that a ‘reboot’ will approach the razor-sharp satire, or the jaw-dropping violence.

In 103 minutes, RoboCop is a hilarious comedy, a character-driven story about a man who comes back to life and discovers his humanity and the greatest superhero movie ever made. It cannot be topped.

That said, I would see another RoboCop film – just not a remake of a film that is absolutely perfect.

Remaking Verhoeven’s films is just as sacrilegious and fucking stupid as remaking Cronenberg’s films. They both have an incredibly interesting and unique style that simply can’t be improved upon.

Sorry, I missed the discussion… why do we need a remake of “Robocop”?

We don’t. A remake is a bad idea. A NEW RoboCop movie that does not include an origin story (been there, done that) is a damn good idea.
