It is with a very heavy heart that we write about the passing of Jonathan Demme, who died this morning from esophageal cancer and complications from heart disease, according to IndieWire.

Demme was an acclaimed director who brought us films like Philadelphia and The Manchurian Candidate remake. However, for horror fans he will always be known as the man who brought us The Silence of the Lambs, one of the greatest psychological horror thrillers of cinematic history.

We send our deepest condolences to his wife and three children during this difficult time.

Rest in peace, Mr. Demme. Thank you for everything you’ve given us, and we hope you are now without pain.
