Voices Alert Woman to Brain Tumor in The Gasp Menagerie

This is an old story, but somehow it hadn’t found its way to me until this week. A video from Ranker Graveyard Shift brought it to my attention, but the actual events happened in 1984 in the UK.

A doctor named Ikechukwu Azuonye met with a woman who was complaining of hearing voices.  Unfortunately, that’s not uncommon in the world of psychiatric medicine.

This woman, however, was unique.  She reported that the voices introduced themselves before giving her a warning.  From Dr. Azuonye’s article in the British Medical Journal:

‘Please don’t be afraid,’ the voice said in a firm but soothing tone. ‘I know it must be shocking for you to hear me speaking to you like this, but this is the easiest way I could think of. My friend and I used to work at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, and we would like to help you.’

The voice provided her with some information for her to verify.  Unfortunately, the journal article doesn’t detail what this was but says the patient  verified the information and found it to be accurate, despite there being no way for her to know it.

Shortly after, the voice urged her to seek a brain scan, claiming she had a tumor that needed immediate attention.  She sought help for the voices from Dr. Azuonye, thinking she’d gone mad.  The doctor prescribed medication to make the voices stop, and they did.  The woman was so thrilled from the relief that she took a celebratory vacation.

The relief was short-lived.  The voice returned, again urging her to go to a specific address.  She had her husband take her there, to find it was the radiology department of a major hospital.  She sought the brain scan requested by the voices, and after some resistance, Dr. Azuonye agreed to have it done.

Sure enough, a tumor was located.  Despite having no outward symptoms, surgery was performed and the large tumor was successfully removed.  Upon leaving the hospital, the voice returned one last time, saying they were glad they were able to help.  She never heard them again.

What could have been the source for the voice in this woman’s head, telling her things she couldn’t know, helping her seek treatment for an ailment she couldn’t be aware of?  Did the tumor cause her mind to hallucinate the voice?  Was this voice from another time or plane, giving her the warning?
