Platinum Dunes Producer Brad Fuller Talks The Future of Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street

Some interesting tidbits coming out of Twitterland this morning concerning Platinum Dunes and their future with our beloved Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street franchises. Nothing too surprising but the source is pretty air-tight.

Dunes producer Brad Fuller reappeared on Twitter this morning to set the record straight on whether or not we’d be seeing Jason Voorhees or Freddy Krueger again courtesy of the production house.

It’s not looking good for Elm Street’s boogeyman. Probably because someone at Warner Bros. actually watched last year’s remake and wondered what in the hell they’d done. Fuller says we shouldn’t be holding our breaths for another one: “As for Freddy, as far as I know, there isnt even talk of writing another script.

Regarding Friday the 13th, Fuller had this to say: “Shannon and Swift wrote a great script. We are ready to go, when New Line is ready. But as of yet, they are not ready.” There have been rumors floating around the web as to whether or not the studio would move ahead on another Friday without Platinum Dunes at the helm, and Fuller’s comments do not necessarily confirm or deny those rumblings.

So there ya have it. It’s a bit of non-news, really, but it’s straight from the source. Chances are pretty good that Platinum Dunes will be leaving these franchises behind. Which means we can all look forward to the inevitable remakes in five years time.

    Eff this company…

I cannot think of a more artistically bankrupt production facility then these people. Perfectly content to make their bones on raping the work of far more talented artists, and to add insult to injury, not an original thought anywhere n their product. Weak scripts with poor character development and absolutely no care for what made the ORIGINAL story work in the first place. Small wonder that the directors hired have just pretty much gone through the paces and collected their check. In this day of unrated home video releases, we couldn’t even get a gory enough FRIDAY THE 13th, at least.

NOES had the one redeeming feature of a good lead. The rest….horrible.

And now these product developers want to put out their own MONSTER SQUAD, the latest movie that’s more then likely to be turned into another 90 min. of product label boredom, with maybe a 30 million box office take.

Someone do the right thing…pull the plug on these snake oil salesmen.

I tend to roll my eyes whenever I hear about another remake – sorry, reboot – but, in the case of Freddy, I’m more than happy if New Line “rebooted” the series without Platinum Dunes. Perhaps that’s just what they’re doing since they seem to be ignoring PD. Hey, one can hope…

  • Terminal

Damn it. I’m all for NOES being held in limbo. I mean the remake was so god awful, I think we should wait for a studio to pick it up who knows what the hell they’re doing.

And I’d actually love it if we could have an F13 film that explores Jason in the winter snow. Imagine hapless victims dealing with frost bite, and bitter cold, while the lake is frozen incapable of putting Jason in to his watery prison. It could be fun.

    Damn.

I just got this image in my mind of some girl running away from Jason on a frozen lake, slipping on the ice, scrambling to get away, while Jason just calmly walks after her.

      • Terminal

Or a victim staving off hypothermia while hiding from Jason. Choosing between freezing to death or running for their lives. It could rock.

I will be waiting for the moment where the potential victim becomes so frustrated and at-wills-end that he/she grabs a clump of snow and throws it in Jasons face.

Then again that,of course, will confuzzle Jason enough to give the poor gal/guy enough time to get back up and continue on his/her icy run to possible freedom. Of course THEN,the ice will crack, victim will fall into the icy lake and will drown. EXCEPT just as we think all is lost, the victim will somehow gain a last breath grip on the ice and pull his/her self above water, only to have Jason standing above machete in hand to chop of his/her head. Heh.

I actually think that could make a great scene.

Honestly, I wouldn’t mind seeing a sequel to Friday the 13th. Derek Mears was great, and that was the least bad of all their movies.

  • doubleh55

I find it dubious that Shannon and Swift made a great script when both their other movies also have bad scripts.

    • Sirand

      Did you read those scripts?

      • LifeMi

You don’t actually think those two are good writers, do you?

        • Vanvance1

I can honestly say I really loved Freddy vs. Jason so yes, they have written a successful horror film.

          • LifeMi

There were some fantastic ideas in Freddy vs. Jason, but I didn’t think the script itself was well-written. The characters were pretty bland and the humor didn’t work for me. I thought it tried too hard to be funny and failed.

          • Vanvance1

I’m going to agree that the teenagers were even more vapid than usual. I think you have to balance that with the awesome showdown moments that were exciting and cheese laden in all the best ways.

I also think that the last Friday the 13th wasn’t bad. I don’t have high expectations for the F13th series and I thought it fit within the cannon well enough.

      • doubleh55

Both of those completely fail to understand what makes both Freddy and Jason work and they completely have no idea about the history of either guy.

        1. They don’t understand that a major reason for the Friday movies to work is the “creative kills” that are all over the place in the previous ones.

        2. Even in the worst Friday movie they at least try to make the kids semi-interesting or at least try to give them some semblance of a backstory.

        3. Jason is not afraid of water. That alone tells you they probably haven’t even seen a Friday the 13th movie.

        4. They really should be ashamed of themselves for that horrible use of faggot in Freddy vs Jason.

        • The Buz

So you didn’t read the script then?

          1. Bed Death= Awesome Kill. And the script had many other very awesome kills in it that were cut due to either budget, or Renny not caring.

          2. While I find that opinion laughable, I will say that their script actually had a lot of great character stuff (most notably Mark’s relationship with his brother…all of which got cut except for one or two lines and that one scene that is in all honesty completely out of context.)

          3. They never wrote Jason being afraid of Water. That was shoe horned in during production without their knowledge.

          4. Kelly Rowland, the editor, and Ronny Yu should be ashamed of themselves for saying it, and not cutting it. Shannon and Swift have gone on record many times stating that they DID NOT write that, and never ever wanted to be associated with such hateful language.

          • LifeMi

I’ll grant you that Swift and Shannon weren’t the big problem with Freddy vs. Jason; it was Ronny Yu’s directing and the casting. Nevertheless, their weak script didn’t help anything. Furthermore, while the F13 films are largely WEAK on character, Elm Street isn’t and therefore the characters should’ve been stronger but the writers failed in that regard. Shannon and Swift had some great ideas in Freddy vs. Jason; they just didn’t put it together well in my opinion. I don’t know how anyone could call their script good.

          • The Buz

I honestly don’t find their script BAD, at least in regards to the material they were working with.

I just think it’s unfair to paint them as the reason FVJ isn’t a good movie. I’d say they came up with a pretty damn good idea for bringing the two together in a way that actually made sense (again in regards to the two franchises).

And agreed, Elm Street does have unique and interesting characters (I cannot for the life of me see how anyone could say that about Friday…aside from Shelly, who the fuck else?) I do like that the only character to get killed by Freddy in FVJ is the only character I find remotely interesting. Not to mention he’s the best actor in the movie. Aside from Keena’s boobs and Robert Englund.

          • LifeMi

Those boobs were robbed at the Oscars. Right up there with Tom Hanks’ hair piece in Da Vinci Code.

          • The Buz

Agreed. A truly shining moment in the preforming arts.

          • doubleh55

Thanks for your response. I guess I should say that the production team behind FvJ are shitty.

This doesn’t explain why Friday the 13th remake stinks.

  • Vanvance1

I’m relived we’re not getting another Elm street from these guys. On the other hand I’m curious about the Shannon & Swift script.

  • PelusaMG

I think Platinum Dunes would even make lousy porn, and that’s a talent few have aspired too!

  • Sirand

Platinum Dunes has done what no final girl has been able to do: Kill these characters for good.

    • GJW

      Hahahaha. LOL! Great comment.
