Clive Barker Gives an Update on the Hellraiser Reboot: Don’t Get Your Hopes Up

There is no franchise that, in my opinion, has been more cruelly battered and shamed than the Hellraiser series. What began as a brilliant and fascinating descent into horror-meets-fantasy quickly found itself in a hole of direct-to-video releases that didn’t expand upon the mythology or offer anything new, aside from more Pinhead.

I mourn what happened because the Hellraiser franchise offered the most promise and possibility for a brilliant horror universe.

Over a year ago, I wrote a piece about how I thought Dimension could fix the Hellraiser series by moving away from Pinhead and instead delving into the world that the iconic horror villain lives in. After all, he’s a general, but he’s not the only one of his kind. There are other cenobites, ones that are older, wiser, and more vicious than he. Pinhead will never be lost as a horror villain, but that world can create so many more stunning aberrations that it boggles my mind they don’t go that route. The world of Hellraiser will always be more interesting than its primary villain.

Talks of a reboot have been happening for years, with little information coming out. However, during a recent Twitter Q&A with Shudder, horror icon Clive Barker responded to a query about the status of just such a Hellraiser reboot, explaining that a script was delivered to Dimension years ago but that was the last he heard from them until a sequel came up. Most likely, Barker is talking about Hellraiser: Judgment, which supposedly comes out on the 28th of this month.

What are your thoughts on Hellraiser? Should the franchise just be left to naturally die out? Should they keep going on the path they’re currently walking with DTV releases? Or should they be bold and try something new? Let me know in the comments!
