Big Ass Spider! Re-Release Spins a Web!

Just in time for National Save a Spider Day on March 14, 2017, the Epic feature film Big Ass Spider! will be unleashed across multiple streaming platforms.
In the 2013 film a ginormous alien arachnid escapes from a military lab and rampages with eight-legged freakiness throughout the city of Los Angeles, taking out people, cars, and buildings along the way. When a massive military strike fails, it is up to three brave souls – Alex (Greg Grunberg), Carly (Clare Kramer), and Jose (Lombardo Boyar) – to zap the cranky creature before the city is creamed.
We had the opportunity to get up close and personal with the heroes, who took us back in time to talk about how the movie was hatched. They revealed that the pic was initially called Mega Spider, and while it wasn’t a bad title, it just didn’t have the cachet of Big Ass Spider! (with the requisite exclamation point, of course). Though the flick is a few years old, fans still tell Greg, Clare, and Lombardo how much they love it.
The cast attributes a monster hunk of the movie’s enduring success to its director and fearless leader, Mike Mendez. All the creepy creature stuff is “right out of Mike’s brain,” Greg said. Mendez made sure there was an array of cool cameos from genre heroes in Big Ass Spider!, just to give it that extra oomph. Be sure and look for cameos by Lin Shaye, Ray Wise, and Lloyd Kaufman to name a few.
While there is indeed a big ass spider in the tale of terror, Greg, Clare, and Lombardo all talked about the magical combo of comedy and heart in the story, which is what they believe sets it apart from most mutant monster movies. The characters really connect, and that’s why they’re so happy to be coming back for a sequel. Whether it’s a standalone film or a weekly series is hard to tell as of yet, but it’s definitely on the radar.
