Mia Goth Talks a Cure for Wellness

Mia Goth, who can next be seen in the Suspiria remake, sat down with us to talk about her role in A Cure for Wellness.  Beware:  A few spoilers follow…

Dread Central: Your character, Hannah, journeys into womanhood throughout the film; what did you call upon for that, personally?

Mia Goth: Yeah, well actually that’s something I really connected to. I felt like there were a lot of parallels between her life and my life, and having to go from girlhood to womanhood was one of them. It’s quite a journey for her; and at times it’s thrilling, at times it’s terrifying, sometimes exciting and painful… yeah, that’ something I really connected with and I think that’s quite a universal thing for women around the world and that’s just something I thought I’d be able to bring to the role because that’s something I continue to go through.

DC: Tell us about working with Gore Verbinski in terms of shaping the character Hannah because she feels very authentic.

MG: Thank you. Yeah, we definitely spoke at great lengths about Hannah, and one of the things that Gore brought up was her perspective on the world and how she actually views it. One of the things he said was in the same way a child might ask “why” to an adult, and it just leaves you completely perplexed because you’ve never really even thought of that; it’s actually a great question. That was something we tried to incorporate into Hannah; she’s got a unique world view because she has been so sheltered so the way she sees things, people, and herself is quite peculiar at times, but then also on the day that you’re shooting, you kind of hope for that magic to happen, those things that happen that aren’t scripted, that aren’t talked about; and that’s the moment that’s really special in what we do. We did a whole tour of Germany, we went to many locations – one of them was Belitz, this little town just outside of Berlin, which used to be a hospital during the first and second World Wars and it’s considered the most haunted place in Germany. To shoot there at night for weeks at a time definitely gives it a more uncomfortable feeling and makes it feel real; it does part of the job for you, makes it more of an immersive experience.

DC: Any scene in particular uncomfortable to film? Like, the scary one in the bath?

MG: Well, funnily enough, that scene was CGI so I was never in a bath ever but they did make a cast of my body and I had to be in this odd position like this for about four hours and I couldn’t move, or twitch my nose, so they put Good Will Hunting on and I was able to drink Coca-Cola from a straw and then they took the cast off and I had these massive rashes all over my body. That was a bit of a challenge.

DC: How about working with Dane DeHann? That couldn’t have been rash-inducing!

MG: [laughs] It was a big deal for me to work with Dane because I’ve been a huge fan of his work for a long time and I think he’s a great actor, I really do. I think he makes really good choices and is kind of the ideal actor to work with. He’s very motivated, very concentrated and focused on the right things, and he gives you a lot, too, as an actor, and that’s always nice to have.

DC: Where did Hannah go after the film ends? [SPOILERS]

MG: I think Lockhart and Hannah might have gone to a farm and… I don’t know, that’s a good question, maybe just a place where they could rest up a bit and chill out just to get over everything that had happened, to recuperate.

Dane DeHaan, Jason Isaacs, and Mia Goth star. The screenplay is by Justin Haythe; story by Justin Haythe and Gore Verbinski, who directed.
