Joe Carnahan Talks Horror Elements in The Grey

We’ve been fans of writer/director Joe Carnahan since seeing Narc back in early 2003 and have been waiting for him to dip a few toes into the horror genre. While his upcoming The Grey may be more action-drama than pure horror, he does label it a “monster movie”, a description that always gets our attention.
In a chat with MTV Movies Blog promoting the December 14th release of The A-Team‘s extended director’s cut on Blu-ray, Carnahan offered the following few tidbits about The Grey: “[It] couldn’t be further from The A-Team in every conception. I’m excited about that…It’s a hard-R exploration of the male id, I guess [laughs]. That’s an encapsulated version of it. Yeah, I’m very proud of it. But listen, it’s also kind of a horror film. It’s a monster movie — not in a Cloverfield sense, though. This is something that has a real basis in reality, and that’s what interests me. These guys are pursued by wolves. It’s a very straight-forward, traditional kind of Jaws-like assault on the moviegoer.
A modern-day Jaws with wolves? We’ll take it if Carnahan can find the right guys to pair with The Grey‘s star, Liam Neeson.
Synopsis:
In Alaska, an oil drilling team struggle to survive after a plane crash strands them in the wild. Hunting the humans are a pack of wolves who see them as intruders.
