Benicio Del Toro to star as the new Wolfman (click to see full size!)El Mayimbe of LatinoReview.com has just posted the first review of Andrew Kevin Walker’s script for Universal Studios’ upcoming Wolfman remake/re-imagining/re-whateveryouwanttocallit. I call it quite promising if El Mayimbe is to be believed.

Not only do we have one of the best horror writers around working on Wolfie’s new storyline (Walker’s credits include Sleepy Hollow and Se7en), but apparently Benicio Del Toro is attached to star as Lawrence Talbot, the role immortalized by Lon Chaney, Jr., in the 1941 version. An excellent choice I’d say. No director has been named yet, but the script went out to a few prospects last week.

According to El Mayimbe, “The script was well crafted; AKW is at the top of his game. The structure is tight, the plot is tight, the characterizations are tight, the reveals come unexpectedly and the tone of the script is extremely dark. The Wolfman action is really hot too. We even have beast on beast action here.”

With a few exceptions, most recent werewolf movies have relied too heavily on CGI, so hopes are high that Universal won’t go that route. We’ll have to wait and see about that, but one thing the review promises is that the film will be “a ballsy hard assed R … Throats get torn out, heads get decapitated, bodies get torn in two, dismembered limbs go flying everywhere, entrails get spilled all over the place…” The fans should be thrilled when they read that! But the film’s not due out until sometime in 2008, and as we all know, a lot can happen between now and then.
