Trailer for The Thing Prequel Leaked Online

A bootleg video of the trailer for The Thing prequel from the NYCC has just shown up online. It’s ultra-crappy in terms of quality but if you’re interested see it while you can!

The Thing (2011) will strike theaters on April 29, 2011. The science-fiction horror thriller is currently the only nationwide release scheduled for that weekend, and it slots into the same timeframe that the Nightmare on Elm Street remake haunted earlier this year.

Matthijs van Heijningen, Jr. is directing from a screenplay by Eric Heisserer and Ronald D. Moore. The cast includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Jonathan Walker, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Dennis Storhøi, Trond Espen Seim, Jørgen Langhelle, Eric Christian Olsen, Stig Henrik Hoff, Jan Gunnar Røise, Kristofer Hivju, and Jo Adrian Haavind.

“Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists. The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being. It can look just like you or me, but inside, it remains inhuman. In the thriller THE THING, paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they’re infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet. Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has traveled to the desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime. Joining a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, she discovers an organism that seems to have died in the crash eons ago. But it is about to wake up. When a simple experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate must join the crew’s pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time. And in this vast, intense land, a parasite that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish.”

Thanks to DC reader Ferg for the heads-up!

You're such an inspiration for the ways that I will never, ever choose to be.

Loved the title reveal at the end, but that’s a lot of (unintentional) shaky-cam (*Goes off to throw up*)

I’m patiently waiting for the day when one of these camcorder videos ends with the sound of an usher’s voice demanding to know what the hell the guy is doing with a camera in the theatre and the visual of a hand grabbing the lens just before the picture cuts out.

This looks pretty cool, crappy video quality aside. I’ve seen complaints that it comes off like more of a remake than a prequel but, honestly, to a degree wouldn’t this have to be?

We know from the opening of Carpenter’s film that a terrible fate befell the Norwegian team. We learn this when they chase the dog across the tundra. At some point the storyline is going to have to revisit the theme of a group of Antarctic scientists finding something in the ice and then dealing with the aftermath of its ability to replicate living organisms. The similarity between the films seems to be a some what unavoidable component in making the logical progression to that scene which opened the 1982 film.
