In the prequel director Roel Reiné will be working from a script penned by Tony Giglio, which is once again set at Terminal Island, where a man named Carl “Luke” Lucas enters the titular game. Look for more soon!

“Death Race 2 takes place in the very near future, as the United States economy begins to decline and violent crime starts to spiral out of control. To contain the growing criminal population, a vast network of for-profit, private prisons springs up, creating a lawless subculture ruled by gangs, cold-blooded killers and sociopaths. The worst of these prisons is Terminal Island. Convicted cop-killer Carl Lucas arrives on the Island to serve his life sentence just as ruthlessly ambitious television personality September Jones launches the ultimate reality show, Death Race. A brutal prison yard demolition derby that pits prisoners against each other in steel reinforced, heavily armed vehicles, Death Race offers the winner the ultimate prize: freedom — if he can survive to enjoy it. When Lucas signs up to be a driver, the stage is set for the birth of a legendary racer.”

You're such an inspiration for the ways that I will never, ever choose to be.

They still don’t have the balls to do anything like the original.

  • Rob

This looks better than the first one. The only downside is no Ian McShane.

    • theGoldenSimatar

But it does have Sean Bean.

The original Death Race is hugely amusing. The remake was almost instantly forgettable.

It boggles my mind how little most of the people remaking films understand why the original was a success.

    • GJW

Yep. One of the hardest laughs I have ever had with a movie is when the hospital set the ederly/handicapped etc. outside in the road for kills and he went off the road and all you saw was docs and nurses flying up in the air behind the bushes. Poetic justice with a huge laugh.

I have to return some video tapes.

  • theGoldenSimatar

Hm, how much of the car footage is gonna be recycled from the first film?

    • Foywonder

I was thinking the same exact thing watching that trailer.

Here’s a third that had the same thought.

I have to return some video tapes.

I’ve rewatched the trailer several times and rewatched my copy of Death Race and to me it looks like they probably used quite a bit of footage from Anderson’s film; either material used in the final film or rushes left on the floor. According to IMDB DR2 was shot in South Africa; which doesn’t look like Montreal to my knowledge. Studio might have saved a few cars (at a quarter million a pop I woulda been shocked if they just chucked ’em) from the original film’s shoot so they might have used some of those.

Reused footage or not, there’s no way it can be worse than ‘Raptor’; that movie is 90% ‘Carnosaur’ footage.

I’m really disappointed that I didn’t see Frankenstein’s Monster driving one of those cars.
