Rest in Peace – Kevin McCarthy

Rest in Peace - Kevin McCarthyAnother star from the golden age of film is no longer with us. Kevin McCarthy, who many fans will remember from the original version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, has passed on at the ripe old age of 96.

Kevin’s career spanned decades and the man was working until the very end. Highlights included numerous television appearances such as memorable roles on “The Twilight Zone”, “Tales from the Crypt”, and “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour”. Horror movie highlights include the aforementioned leading role as Dr. Miles J. Bennell in 1956’s Body Snatchers, as well as Twilight Zone: The Movie, The Howling, the 1978 version of Piranha, and many, many, more.

The news comes straight from Kevin’s daughter, who stated that McCarthy died of natural causes on Saturday in a Cape Cod hospital. We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to offer our deepest of sympathies to Kevin’s friends, family, and constituents.

Thanks for all of the work and memories over the last six decades, sir. You will be incredibly missed.

I first saw Kevin McCarthy on screen at the age of eight years old, when he popped up in a sly cameo for the 1978 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (referencing his character from the original film).

Over the next decade, I would see his face pop up again and again, often in genre films ,until I reached a point where I knew that if I saw his name in the credits, at least one performance in the film I was planning to see would be worth a watch.

I loved his quirky turn as Uncle Walt in Joe Dante’s take on “It’s a good life” for Twilight Zone the Movie and his funny, mean spirited performance as the villain in UHF. Speaking of working with Dante, who can forget McCarthy’s role as a crazed scientist in the original Piranha? No matter the film, no matter how large or small his role, Kevin McCarthy delivered 100% every single time.

This is a truly sad day for film fans everywhere. RIP Kevin. Thank you so much for all of the terrific memories.
