Fright Channel Joins the Fray

Here comes another one!Well, well, well. What have we here? It looks like there’s a new entry in the race to get another horror channel on the airwaves — The Fright Channel!

According to Variety’s online news publication Multichannel.com, veteran TV producer Rob Claridge is spearheading efforts to launch TFC on Friday, July 13th. Initially they will buy blocks of time (biweekly from 10:00 pm to 12:00 midnight) from cable companies in Los Angeles and New York City with the hope of becoming an actual 24/7 network as soon as possible. Their website, TheFrightChannel.tv, is live, and there are also plans for broadband broadcasts later in the year and a secondary kids’ channel, Fright Jr., which will offer “educational content with a horror flair.”

Speaking at the Cable Show ’07 in Vegas, Claridge said he has assembled original horror content, such as never-before-seen movies, and he also has a slate of original programs in development. The Fright Channel formed a “Fright Force,” a band of independent producers who will create and trade content. Specifically, according to TFC’s website, programming will consist of “classic monster movies, original documentary and narrative series, classic horror TV shows, and world premiere events of brand new works from today’s burgeoning horror masters.” We say, “Bring it on!”

Claridge’s credits include the reality series The Bachelor, The Mole, Average Joe, and Grease: You’re The One That I Want. Nothing suggests a great deal of expertise in the horror genre, but supposedly the guy is a huge fan, and at least he does have experience in TV production and editing. But we’ve all heard it before, and only time will tell how successful TFC turns out to be …

Keep it here for more as it comes.
