When we heard Amna K. Boheim’s The Silent Children was inspired by Susan Hill’s The Woman in Black, of course we had to check it out; and as a result of what we found, the novel landed in the #6 spot on our “Best Books of the Halloween Season” list.

The Silent Children – haunting, disturbing, and completely unforgettable – is available now from Troubador Publishing.

From the Press Release:
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but this picture just needs two: “You knew.” An old and disturbing photograph of a boy and a girl, it came enclosed with a death bed request to find out if the boy was still alive.

Inspired by Susan Hill’s The Woman in Black and Henry James’ Turn of the Screw, Amna K. Boheim knew her debut novel would begin with a disturbing black and white photograph. The Silent Children, shortlisted for The Literary Consultancy Pen Factor Award and awarded the 2016 silver medal for best suspense/thriller in the Independent Publisher Book Awards, is a chilling, atmospheric story steeped in mystery and ambiguity.

Synopsis:
Vienna, 1938: Something’s amiss at the home of young Annabel Albrecht. First, her favorite maid, Eva, disappears; then her friend Oskar. Worse is to come – her brother is murdered, and her mother is taken away, leaving Annabel to fend for herself.

Almost 70 years later, Annabel’s son, Max, uncovers his mother’s long-buried past and unlocks the secrets preserved by Annabel’s missing friends. But as Max is to discover, some children can never be completely silenced. Is he haunted by ghosts or by guilt, and will he ever escape?

The Silent Children is a gripping tale of tragedy and revenge, a modern-day ghost story that will stay with you long after you turn the final page.
