You ask what subgenre hasn’t been exploited? The post-mortem photography one! In fact, I believe the filmmakers behind the upcoming supernatural horror flick The Mourning Portrait might be the first to focus an entire horror film around it.
But that’s exactly what writer/director Paul Schattel is doing. Built around the practice of post-mortem photography in 1920s Appalachia, it is the story of a newly widowed bootlegger named Miller who enlists the services of a traveling mourning portrait photographer. Grief turns to terror when the mysterious visitor unveils his unearthly powers and Miller’s daughter disappears.
They’ve certainly got a good cast; Dermot Mulroney (Zodiac), Wentworth Miller (Resident Evil: Afterlife), Diane Ladd (Chinatown) and Melissa Leo (21 Grams) are on board, and if you’re ready, then dig on the teaser below.
