The Thai horror film Apatti has been submitted by the Federation of Thai Film Associations to be the country’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film at next year’s Academy Awards, as confirmed by the Bangkok Post.

In Apatti, a reluctant young man is forced to become a Buddhist monk by his father. He eventually forms a bond with a young woman at the isolated village where his temple is located, but monks are forbidden to have relationships, their secret romance causes a series of sinister events to occur.

The film ran into a spot of controversy after it was banned by Thai censors last year because of its depiction of material offensive to the Buddhist faith. In order to ensure a release, the title was changed from Arbat to Apatti, and certain scenes, such as a monk kissing a woman, monks drinking alcohol, and trainee monks lifting a Buddhist image by the head, were removed.

Apatti was directed by Kanittha Kwanyu and starred Pimpan Chalaikupp, Sorapong Chatree, Danai Jarujinda. We’d certainly love to see it entered into the Oscars, but given their reluctance to nominate horror films in any category, it seems unlikely.
