Are the Weinsteins and Aja Spawning a Piranha 3D 2?

It’s not unusual for there to be sequel talk on a Monday following the opening weekend of a new movie. It is unusual when the movie being discussed for sequelization underperformed at the weekend’s box office. Despite opening in fifth place and grossing less moolah than originally forecasted, the combination of critical and word-of-mouth praise for Piranha 3D may be enough to inspire a second feeding frenzy.

Dimension Films confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that director Alexandre Aja and producer Mark Canton are back formulating plans for a follow-up to Piranha 3D. Canton tells EW, “We are thrilled that audiences are not just loving Piranha 3D, but cheering for it. And it’s fantastic that so many critics are really getting the movie and recommending it. We can’t wait to get to work on the sequel.” Kind of funny considering the financially beleaguered Weinsteins initially tried to avoid screening the film for most critics.

Can’t say I’m too surprised there’s sequel talk, though after seeing the less-than-spectacular box office, I figured a series of DVD sequels might be the way they’d go.

So what can we expect from a Piranha 3D (review here) sequel? Will it even be in 3D? How can you possibly top the spring break bloodbath or naked Kelly Brook underwater lesbian ballet? Too early to say though EW does have a quote from Aja a few weeks back throwing out ideas for such a sequel: “We had many ideas, like the full moon party in Thailand — a huge event with like 200,000 young people from all around the world taking mushrooms and partying on the beach.”

That’s all well and good, but if a Piranha 3D sequel does become a reality, I say take a page from the book of Cameron and have them fly.
