I Saw the Devil Sees the Censors!

Though the MPAA has been a lot friendlier here in terms of gore and such, the same cannot be said abroad. Case in point … Kim Jee-woon’s new film I Saw the Devil starring Old Boy‘s Choi Min-sik.
According to Variety Korean helmer Kim Jee-woon is rushing to recut his latest terror tale just ahead of its Thursday release date after local censors upheld its restricted rating for extreme violence. Talk about bringing it down to the wire.
Under a law introduced in 2002, restricted films can’t be shown in general theaters or be released on home video. They can only be shown in specially licensed adult theaters — but, as yet, no such venues exist in the film’s homeland. Hopefully when it comes Stateside, we’ll get the whole enchilada.
The film, labeled as a hard-boiled thriller, stars Min-sik as a psychopathic serial killer up against Lee Byung-hun (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) as a special agent whose fiancée becomes one of his victims. Lee’s cool-headed and intelligent character in turn becomes a monster in order to avenge the killing.
