Ice Spiders, Harpies … Oh My!

Ice Spiders! As Mr. Butane told you in his recent story about this weekend’s Sci-Fi Channel premiere of Lake Placid 2, I’m so dedicated to viewing and reviewing Sci-Fi Channel original movies that I’ll drop everything to do so. That’s a damn lie, but it doesn’t change the fact that I have already cleared my schedule for the evening of Saturday, June 9th, in order to catch the Sci-Fi Channel premiere of Ice Spiders.

Directed by Tibor Takacs, he of the great Mansquito fame as well as the upcoming Megasnake that I just reported on a few days back, Ice Spiders has an Olympic ski team at a remote ski resort forced to contend with big mutant arachnids that have escaped from a nearby secret government lab. The creature feature stars three former cast members of “Melrose Place”: Patrick Muldoon (best known for being on the receiving end of a brain-sucking in Starship Troopers), Thomas Calabro (who already battled bugs in the USA Network movie Creepy Crawlers a few years back), and Vanessa Williams (sorry, not that Vanessa Williams); plus legendary TV producer Stephen J. Cannell appears in a small supporting role. I’m just glad they opted against the previous retitling Cold Snap, which is what the film is still currently listed as on IMDB.

Ice Spiders is set to premiere on June 9th at 9/8 Central with a midnight replay to follow. In the five or six weeks we still have until then, feel free to check out the pretty decent trailer for Ice Spiders.

And since I’m talking about Sci-Fi original movies in June, might as well also mention that June 23rd sees the premiere of Stan Lee’s Harpies. There’s not much info available on this one other than it having to do with Stephen Baldwin and Scott Valentine battling mythological harpies, and somewhere along the way Stan Lee signed off to have his name associated with the film despite having seemingly nothing to do with its creation. Hey, as long as it’s better than the last Sci-Fi flick that premiered with Stan Lee’s name stamped on it…
