Melancholia Begins Production

Next year’s feel good movie from Lars von Trier, Melancholia, is officially on its way to probably depress you, confuse you, and put you in a bad mood. That’s just what he does with his movies, man! Well, that and lots of humping, but that’s another story.

According to Screen Daily Lars von Trier held a press conference Monday to announce further plans for his new film and declared it “a beautiful movie about the end of the world.” The English-language film started shooting July 22 in Trollhattan, Sweden and will continue its shoot through September 8. The film is set for release in May-June 2011.

Melancholia stars John Hurt, Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg (Antichrist), Kiefer Sutherland (Lost Boys, Mirrors), Charlotte Rampling (Angel Heart), Alexander Skarsgard (“True Blood”), Stellan Skarsgard (Exorcist: The Beginning), and Udo Kier (Suspiria).

The film’s title refers to Planet Melancholia, an enormous planet that looms threateningly close to Earth. “No more happy endings!” commented Lars von Trier in an earlier story, who will direct from his own screenplay.

I enjoy a good disaster movie. I need to see a new/good disaster movie. That 2012 crap just didn’t do it for me. Way overdone as far as the special effects went. Especially that whole airplane take-off/RV scene deal. I lost interest there and mostly tuned out. This is a cool premise (imo) and not a bad cast. OH, and Keifer called. He said to tell ya don’t use Mirrors in his credits anymore. Go with The Lost Boys and Flatliners (LOL)

I’ve liked von Trier’s genre work so far (can’t say the same for his arthouse and Dogme 95 efforts) so I’m looking forward to this.
