Fans Uncover Blair Witch Viral Marketing Website

One department the Blair Witch Project franchise has always excelled in is the marketing, which has carried over to this year’s upcoming sequel. Adam Wingard’s Blair Witch was originally promoted under the top secret title The Woods, and it seems there are still many secrets left to uncover.

As spotted by Arrow in the Head, eagle-eyed Blair Witch fans have unearthed what looks to be a faux Kickstarter campaign for a movie titled The Absence of Closure, described as a feature-length documentary that “examines the tragedy of ambiguous loss.” The campaign notes that the doc’s director, Lisa Arlington, went missing sometime after the 2014 launch of the fund, and the whole thing certainly seems to be viral marketing for the doc that the characters in Blair Witch head out into the woods to shoot.

Wingard’s film centers on the brother of Blair Witch Project character Heather, who goes into the infamous Maryland woods in an effort to find out what happened to his sister. In other words, he’s experienced an ambiguous loss, and was dealt the very absence of closure. Oh and did I mention that there’s a character in Blair Witch named Lisa?

From the faux Kickstarter…

Hello, my name is Kaylee Morgan and I’m Lisa’s best friend. As some of you know, it’s been over two years since anyone has heard from Lisa. Her parents recently found her Kickstarter password in an old notebook and they asked me to write this update, in case any of you do not know what happened or might have information.

In short: Lisa disappeared in May 2014 during production of her documentary ABSENCE OF CLOSURE in Northwest Maryland. James, the subject of her film, and two of his friends are also missing. Their whereabouts are unknown.

Well that confirms it. Poke around the Absence of Closure campaign and let us know if you find anything cool!

Blair Witch (review) arrives in theaters on September 16th.

Written by Simon Barrett and directed by Adam Wingard, Blair Witch stars James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez, Brandon Scott, Valorie Curry, Corbin Reid, and Wes Robinson.

Roy Lee (The Ring, The Grudge, The Strangers, It), Steven Schneider (Paranormal Activity, Insidious), Keith Calder, and Jessica Wu (You’re Next, The Guest) produce.

Synopsis:
A group of college students venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of James’ sister, who many believe is connected to the legend of the Blair Witch. At first the group is hopeful, especially when a pair of locals offer to act as guides through the dark and winding woods, but as the endless night wears on, the group is visited by a menacing presence. Slowly, they begin to realize the legend is all too real and more sinister than they could have imagined.
