San Diego Comic-Con 2010: Drive Angry – Patrick Lussier, Nicolas Cage, and William Fichtner Speak! See the Teaser!

One of our more highly anticipated releases for 2011 has got to be the upcoming badass revenge flick, Drive Angry in 3D. While at the San Diego Comic-Con, Dread Central caught up with director Patrick Lussier and the film’s stars Nicolas Cage and William Fichtner to find out what fans can expect from the project.
Drive Angry re-teamed Lussier with Todd Farmer (Lussier’s writing partner for My Bloody Valentine 3D) on the script. The director said for his latest, fans should expect a lot of adrenaline as well as a decent body count.
“Drive Angry is a full-blown, high octane roller coaster that you strap into to have a good time. It’s designed to be a violent, gory sexy movie and making it in 3D just lends itself so well to this format of storytelling,” Lussier said.
The writer/director, who is no stranger to the 3D format, said his work on My Bloody Valentine inspired him to work again in that eye-popping format.
Lussier explained, “We had such an amazing time doing 3-D with My Bloody Valentine that when this movie came up, we immediately knew we wanted to make it in 3D. I always knew that I wanted to specifically make an action movie in 3D, because fans have never have seen that before. That’s why we wanted to do it.”
Cage, who plays the vengeful father that finds a loophole out of hell to avenge the death of his daughter and kidnapping of his grandchild, gave us a little insight to his dark protagonist in Drive Angry.
“I have always believed that the best characters raise more questions than give answers,” said Cage. “I don’t know that I would say that my character is just angry. I think he’s more mysterious than that. He just broke out of hell. He was angry in his human life and he’s something else now.”
“He’s like a ghost and I see him like a protector of children. So there is that good side of him but at the end of the day, he’s still on the wrong side of the line,” Cage added.
Fichtner, who also plays a mysterious character known to us only as The Accountant, spoke about his experience working alongside Lussier and Cage for Drive Angry.
“From the very first time I met Patrick, he’s been the complete opposite of everything you ever hear about most Hollywood directors,” said Fichtner. “He’s just so passionate, so enthusiastic and he really worked hard on the film. I knew the first time I read the script that Nic was going to play the main character and I could just hear Nic saying these things as I read them, and it was almost like magic.”
“I knew from the start that this was going to be a special collaboration and Drive Angry is in the top two things I have ever worked on,” Fichtner added.
