Dario Argento Gives His Blessing – Suspiria Remake a Go!

After months of various people chasing the rights for a remake of the Dario Argento classic Suspiria, the maestro himself has finally given the project his blessing. Sort of. Well, a little of his blessing at least.

According to Bad Taste Marco Morabito will produce and “David Gordon Green will be the director; Dario Argento finally has agreed to…the remake. It took nine months to convince the director, who in the end accepted because, as Morabito reveals, ‘[he was] convinced that his movie is a masterpiece and can’t be overshadowed’.

A rumor that Marilyn Manson would be in the flick was also quickly debunked by Morabito. “No, it’s just a rumor. I read it too on the Internet, and I don’t know where it comes from! We never even thought about that.

Look for more soon and let the fireworks begin.

In the original film Jessica Harper starred as Suzy Banyon, a young American ballet dancer who arrives at a prestigious European dance academy run by the mysterious Madame Blanc (Joan Bennett) and Miss Tanner (Alida Valli). But when a series of bizarre incidents and horrific crimes turn the school into a waking nightmare of the damned, Suzy must escape the academy’s unspeakable secret of supernatural evil.

Suspiria is Suspiria because of Argento, and the nightmarish atmosphere he marshalled through fluid dolly work, vivid technicolor colors, abrupt editing rhythms, and wonderfully witchy music. These were the methods he used, singularly, to capture the images seemingly ripped directly from his subconscious. The story isn’t even that great. It’s all in the presentation.

David Gordon Green, as much as I respect him, is not Argento. It’s not his idea, as Masked Slasher alluded to. Green held so much promise in his early career as an original filmmaker, but these Apatow comedies and now a remake of a horror classic don’t bode well for the reputation he initially garnered for himself.

All there really is to say……Lame!

  • Masked Slasher

Yeah, this doesn’t have my blessing, either.

    Filth. Filth. Filth.

Suspiria is vintage Argento, born from his vision. To remake it will make it feel like a cheap copy if they try copying his style, or it will be ridiculous and cheap cash-in.

To get this in theaters, they’re most likely going to avoid the obtuse and surreal aspects of the original so not to confuse and alienate audiences.

    Terrible idea.

Lets face it wether Argento gave his blessing or not the Remake is and was gonna be made…tis a shame yet another classic is gonna be torn to shreds

    • DavidFullam

Exactly. We of course are blessed not to have to watch it.

    Waste of time.

At least Carpenter flat out says he lets the remakes happen because he’s getting paid. I can respect that level of honesty.

  • GJW

    (Cough)………..I didn’t give MY blessing.
