First Annual Poe Film Festival Coming to Virginia this Fall!

Published

on

If you’re like me and worship Edgar Allan Poe like the poetic god that he deserves to be recognized as, then fans of the master made famous for thrilling your mind with vivid horror tales from long ago are in for a massive treat. The first annual International Poe Film Festival is coming this fall, brought to you by the official Poe Museum and the Byrd Theatre in Richmond, Virginia.

The three-day film festival runs September 22-24, 2016, and aims to please Poe fanatics by “showcasing the best in Edgar Allan Poe movies of the past ninety years from around the world,” per the official press release from The Richmond Times. Films starring Hollywood legends including Vincent Price (House of Usher) and Sir Christopher Lee (Extraordinary Tales) are just a sample among the movies getting a screening during festival times.

The festivities will begin at the famous Poe Museum on Thursday, September 22, promptly at 6:00 PM, kicking off what they are referring to as “Unhappy Hour,” with a very special guest on hand for the duration of the three-day event: Victoria Price, daughter of horror icon Vincent Price. The lovely Ms. Price has partnered up with this outstanding event to host films starring her father such as House of Usher, which will be screening on Friday, the 23rd, along with more recent Poe adaptation Stonehearst Asylum.

On Saturday evening the event hosts “An Evening with Victoria Price,” where ticketed guests will be able to rub elbows and chat it up with the legend’s daughter while celebrating the life of both her father and Edgar Allan Poe.

The festival will also be revealing a brand new exhibit of Poe-inspired art in partnership with Ohio’s Good Goat Gallery. Raul Garcia, director of Extraordinary Tales, and John LaTier, director of The Tell-Tale Heart, will also be in attendance to host panel discussions with event guests.

To sum it up briefly for Poe fans who plan to attend the event… bring a change of pant. Jean creaming will be in full effect.

Thelma Is Fantastic and Now You Can Watch the Opening Scene

Published

on

One of this year’s most beautiful and subdued horror films is Joachim Trier’s Thelma (review), which opens in Los Angeles tonight. To give you a bit of what the film is like, The Orchard have released the opening scene, which shows a man and his daughter hunting in the bleak Norwegian winter. When they come across a young deer, the true intentions of this trip become apparent…

Having seen Thelma, I can tell you that it’s truly something special. It’s a slow burn, to be certain, but it plays out gorgeously, resulting in a film that has yet to leave my mind.

Related Story: Exclusive Interview with Thelma’s Joachim Trier

Locations and tickets for Thelma can be found here.

Synopsis:
Thelma, a shy young student, has just left her religious family in a small town on the west coast of Norway to study at a university in Oslo. While at the library one day, she experiences a violent, unexpected seizure. Soon after, she finds herself intensely drawn toward Anja, a beautiful young student who reciprocates Thelma’s powerful attraction. As the semester continues, Thelma becomes increasingly overwhelmed by her intense feelings for Anja – feelings she doesn’t dare acknowledge, even to herself – while at the same time experiencing even more extreme seizures. As it becomes clearer that the seizures are a symptom of inexplicable, often dangerous, supernatural abilities, Thelma is confronted with tragic secrets of her past, and the terrifying implications of her powers.
