The reality of A&E’s “Bates Motel,” being a prequel series and all, was that it wasn’t going to last forever, and now that it looks like the fifth season will delve into Psycho territory in the wake of the Season 4 finale, it wasn’t all that hard to predict that the end was near. And indeed it is, as we’ve just learned.

At Comic-Con, the network officially announced that Season 5 will be the final season of “Bates Motel,” and the news was soon thereafter posted on the show’s Twitter account (@InsideBates).

It’s official,” the tweet noted. “Bates Motel will close after Season 5.”

From what we understand, the fifth and final season of the show will be informed by Hitchcock’s Psycho, though not a direct remake of the classic horror film.

In a surprising announcement, singer Rihanna has been cast as Marion Crane.

We wanted to thrust the iconic role into a contemporary spotlight and redefine it in a meaningful and exciting new way. We also heard Rihanna was a fan of the show, and we were huge fans of hers, so it was the perfect collision of creativity and fate,” said executive producers Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin.

Additional announcements included: Vera Farmiga to executive produce and return in her Emmy-nominated role as Norma after her epic death in the final episodes of season four. Max Thieriot will make his directorial debut and Nestor Carbonell will direct for a third time. Finally, Freddie Highmore will write his second episode alongside executive producers Kerry Ehrin and Carlton Cuse.

“Bates Motel” will begin production this fall in Vancouver and will return for its final season in 2017.
