DVD Releases: 6/8/2010: Let the Metal Man Take You Up the Creek to Shutter Island

This week’s DVD and Blu-ray releases are definitely on the slim side, but there are still a few gems worth your attention, including a National Geographic documentary that explores centuries of vampire lore and legend, unearthing new science and insights on superstition and psychology … all with nary a sparkle in sight!
Unquestionably the pick of the week is Shutter Island. If you missed it in theatres, now’s your chance to watch some real masters at work. Scorsese. DiCaprio. It’s obvious both are still in their prime. As an added treat there’s Michelle Williams, who manages to do quite a lot with a very small role.
So, what else do we have coming on June 8th? How about Reggie Bannister in Metal Man as Dr. Arthur Blake, a bio-mech engineer who is murdered by evil weapons dealer Sebastian Reed, who uses ninja henchmen and his ultimate secret weapon, the Mecha Terror robot, to locate Blake’s one-of-a-kind Metal Suit? Or there’s Creek about a group of friends on their way to a horror convention who are lured into a roadside attraction promising them the opportunity to find gold. And to go along with the real vamp doc mentioned above, there’s a faux one by two desperate young filmmakers who stumble upon Anthony McAllister, who agrees to let them document every aspect of his horrifically violent, cannibalistic lifestyle.
You’ve got to be a least a little intrigued by the description of Bloodlock: “A secret basement room, a solid titanium door, an intricate locking mechanism never meant to be unlocked. An innocent, emotionally wounded wife, her husband in sexual deceit with her sister. An honest, helpful locksmith, an old couple greedy for immortality, an evil entity trapped behind the door.” That’s a lot of shit going on!
Lastly we have The Cry of the Owl, which Uncle Creepy has seen and says is not really a horror movie, more of a dramatic thriller. But he did really enjoy it. Since we have been covering it (based on some descriptions that sounded more genre-related than the final product), we thought it’d be good to clue you guys in on what it’s really like.
