DVD Art for George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead?

So you haven’t had a chance to watch George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead, which is playing now on VOD, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3 and in select theatres? Not to worry. As we reported earlier, August 24th is the date you’ll be able to own the flick on DVD and Blu-ray, and we’ve got a bit of artwork for you to boot.

Eagle-eyed DC reader Matt B alerted us to the fact that over on Walmart.com the Blu-ray and the DVD are available for pre-order. Even more interesting, it seems as if there are two different DVD packages coming – a single disc and a two-disc Ultimate Undead Edition. Check out the artwork below, and look for more soon!

Like its predecessors, Romero’s Survival of the Dead (reviews here and here) takes place in a desperate, nightmarish world where the dead walk the earth, relentlessly attacking the living. It is the story of Plum Island – a beautiful refuge whose isolation allows two powerful families to maintain a semblance of order in the wake of the zombie holocaust. But as the inhabitants slowly die off, the two clans become sharply divided: The O’Flynns believe that the undead must be destroyed without exception, while the Muldoons insist that afflicted loved ones be kept “alive” until a cure is found. The result is an escalating showdown with echoes of a classic Western stand-off that erupts in brutality and violence.

AGAIN I really am the only one who put Land on the near top holy shit

  • James Coker

good to know we both like DAY the best uncle Creepy, but because LAND is soo GLOSSY it’s always at the near bottom of every fans Favorite romero zombie list….I really am the only one who puts it at the near top. LOL

  • James Coker

how come no other horror fan likes Land of the Dead? I liked that one alot, sure it was a studio film but i thought it was pretty good am i the only one on Dreadcentral who did?
    Favorite Romero zombie films
    1. Day of the Dead
    2. Land of the Dead
    3. Dawn of the Dead
    4. Night of the Living Dead
haven’t seen Survival and i didn’t like Diary

    • Uncle Creepy

Land was good but also the most glossy feeling DEAD film, and I think most Romero fans dig George’s gritter indie stuff more.

      My ranking is as follows:

1 – Day of the Dead
2 – Night of the Living Dead
3 – Dawn of the Dead
4 – Survival of the Dead
5 – Land of the Dead
6 – Diary of the Dead

      • LifeMi

Dawn, Night, Day, Land, Diary. Can’t wait for Survival to come out.

      • Floydian Trip

Totally agree with your top 3 Creepy. Day of the Dead is one of my favorite horror films period.

I don’t bother listing Land and Diary I disliked them so much and won’t be watching Survival probably ever unless Goerge gives me the movie himself to make up for the money and time I wasted on the previous two.

      • Vanvance1

Creepy’s list is the same as mine… though I’d likely leave ‘Diary’ off the list as I prefer to pretend it never happened. Just like I am in denial Kubrick ever made ‘Eyes Wide Shut’.

        • Floydian Trip

Most people seem to not like Eyes Wide Shut but I think it’s damn brilliant. I wasn’t a jealous guy until I got married but I can relate very well now. Tom and Nicole turned in amazing performances together and I’d go so far as to say that now it’s one of my favorite Kubrick films but then I could say that about all of them. I was playing Scene It yesterday and a clip from Dr. Strangelove came up and made me want to watch it again. Love that one.

          • Vanvance1

I remember being so disappointed by ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ that I tried to convince myself it was full of thematic content I simply wasn’t picking up.

I went out and bought the book ‘Eyes Wide Open’ by the screen writer (more enjoyable than the movie)… Found out Kubrick’s Jungian intent (and I have read Carl Jung) and even after that I still couldn’t see how the movie was in any way a success.

But I’m with you on Strangelove, freaking brilliant along with the rest of his filmography.

        • Terminal

Vanvance1 I thought Diary was absolutely brilliant. It’s better than Survival, personally.

      • Terminal

        Creepy for me it’s:
        1. Dawn
        2. Night
        3. Day
        4. Diary
        5. Survival
        6. Land

Second cover art one is definitly the better one

  • Vanvance1

I’ll be snagging the blu ray so I hope it has all the goodies the two disc dvd set does.

  • RingoJ

If only the movie was as good as the art.

  • Terminal

Now THAT’S wicked DVD Art! My favorite is the second one. Great movie, I intend on buying this on DVD as soon as possible for my collection.

Annnnnd ..once again you and I are on the same page Terminal. This is a must buy for me. I definitely think the second cover is rocking the nastiness in a much more memorable way. Actually, I’m kind of wondering why in the hell that wasn’t chosen to grace the official movie poster to begin with.

I wonder if they’ll release an ‘unrated’ edition with extra grue or if the disc will run the Diary course and be the theatrical version? Not that I mind either way. Survival was easily juicy enough in terms of the red stuff to satisfy my inner gore hound. Watching the film, I couldn’t help but reflect that if this movie had been released as is in, say, 1989 it would have received an X or NC-17..one of those “No one under 17 will be admitted” scenarios. It’s really rather amazing what a hard R can get away with today.

      • Terminal

Cinemascribe it would be sweet if they added more of the grue. The gore was wicked enough on the movie to begin with, but more is always good. I love how Romero still adds gut munching scenes and animal cruelty, yet the remake to Dawn didn’t even officially have a chomping scene at all save for bloody bite scenes. I was a bit surprised when the zombie chick bit her horse, I have to admit. Romero still has balls, IMO.

Definitely the better cover of the two is the bottom one. A must buy for me.

I did see this the other night, and I liked it. I don’t see what else someone could want. And yes, there were some gut-wrenching surprises at the end.SPOILERS COMING!!!!! IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THIS STOP READING!!!!! I was surprised she chomped at the horsie yes Terminal, but what surprised me FIRST was when she nipped,ok chomped off half of her sisters hand. I was kind of hoping she would live since she was the only surviving daughter,so when that happened I felt a little sad,I was like aw fuck!! Then yes, other zombie sis bit the horse, but then the next aw FUCK moment was when she tried to tell everyone worked, and BAM,head exploded. I liked this. I actually put this up there in my top 3. 1)Dawn 2)Night 3)Survival 4)Day 5)Land 6)Diary

Abashed the Devil stood and felt how awful goodness is.

          • Terminal

FireRam glad you enjoyed this as much as I did.

            SPOILERS BELOW!

It was the whole debate about whether people could still have memories after undeath that fucked her over. Her sister is a zombie and she was still convinced her sister remembered her because of the fact that she didn’t harm the horse.

But the problem is the sister hadn’t had a proper taste of flesh yet. She just rode the horse on instinct. So when she bit her sister, she realized “holy shit, I want to chomp on my horse a bit,” and the rest of the zombies followed along in a monkey see monkey do fashion.

It’s just a shame she couldn’t reveal that horses were a great substitute for long pig in the end. The whole point IMO was that if these morons stopped fighting long enough about the trivialities they could have solved a humongous problem and found a common ground by using horses as substitutes and probably keeping them active, which would have solved both problems.
