John Carpenter Says Horror Genre Needs a New Beginning

We’re always interested to hear what our favorite masters of horror think about the current state of the genre, and John Carpenter just spewed some thoughts on that very subject. Several websites have twist-turned his words in an effort to create some controversy, but we don’t have any interest in doing that. So read on for what he actually thinks!

On the “WTF with Marc Maron” podcast, Carpenter briefly talked about “The Walking Dead,” noting that the core idea of the series owes a huge debt, like everything zombie-related, to George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. And in a current climate where all new things seem to be inspired by old things, Carpenter feels it’s time for the horror genre to, well, reboot itself.

You understand something,” said Carpenter, when Maron brought up the hit AMC series. “That was a movie that George Romero made back in ’68. And they have milked… people have milked his movie… and they are still milking it. Oh, it’s unreal.”

I think horror is due for a new beginning here,” Carpenter added. “It’s due for a resurgence. We have to change it up. We can’t do these cheap poltergeist movies, either. Paranormal, that’s what I’m talking about. Stop. Please stop. We’re due for a change, and I think it’ll come. Horror movies have been with us since the beginning of cinema, and they’re always the same. Most of them are bad, a few are average, and a couple are really good. And they keep changing with the culture. So they’ll change again, as the culture changes. As we evolve and move through time.”
