Make a Date With George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead DVD and Blu-ray

So you haven’t had a chance to watch George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead, which is playing now on VOD, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3, and are afraid that it won’t be in any theatres near you come May 28th? Then we have a date that may very well interest you!

Mark down August 24th on your calendars as that’s the day the movie will be hitting DVD and Blu-ray from Magnolia/Magnet. From what we hear, the package is gonna be pretty stacked, too. Amazing that we’re finally getting a release that’s better than our UK cousins! Whodda thunk it!?!

Like its predecessors, Romero’s Survival of the Dead (reviews here and here) takes place in a desperate, nightmarish world where the dead walk the earth, relentlessly attacking the living. It is the story of Plum Island – a beautiful refuge whose isolation allows two powerful families to maintain a semblance of order in the wake of the zombie holocaust. But as the inhabitants slowly die off, the two clans become sharply divided: The O’Flynns believe that the undead must be destroyed without exception, while the Muldoons insist that afflicted loved ones be kept “alive” until a cure is found. The result is an escalating showdown with echoes of a classic Western stand-off that erupts in brutality and violence.

You're such an inspiration for the ways that I will never, ever choose to be.

I thought it was a very good film. Not Romero’s best but better than Land and leagues above Diary. It was thoroughly entertaining all the way through.

Romero’s problem is he has to live up to gargantuan expectations. Worse he has to do it on a low budget.

Agreed, I had a blast with it too. That’s just the way Romero movies are though. People are polarized by them. When “Day” first came out it was met with mucho venom because it didn’t live up to “Dawn”. Now it’s considered a classic. Go figure.

I was fine with the dark humor in the flick. People forget sometimes that this is the same guy who took a break during what is arguably the greatest zombie film ever made to have a quick pie fight.

Still, I can totally see why some people are put off by “Survival” and that’s fine too. Like you said, Vervance, the guy will never be able to fill even his own shoes when it comes to expectations.

I will say this though … even the worst Romero zombie film is better than most of the drivel we’re subjected to. For me they rank:

Some may freak out about me putting Dawn third, but fuck you, its my hierarchy! LOL 😉
