JJ Abrams’ Super 8 – The Mystery Continues

In true JJ Abrams fashion, just when you think you have things almost all figured out, he pulls the rug right out from under you and then giggles maniacally while you fall on your ass. Just yesterday it was reported that his latest project, Super 8, would somehow be related to Cloverfield. Now? Not so much. Round and round we go.

Here’s the latest — according to New York Magazine’s Vulture at last night’s 2010 Time 100 Gala at the Time Warner Center, a cagey Abrams insisted that Super 8 has nothing to do with Cloverfield, stating, “It has nothing whatsoever to do with Cloverfield, despite your expert reporting.” When asked what it did have to do with, Abrams simply answered “I won’t be able to tell you until it’s done”. You just gotta love this, guy!

Super 8 tells the tale of bunch of kids who are shooting a movie with a Super 8 camera that notice upon viewing their footage that they’ve captured what appears to be an alien on film. Look for more soon.

In case you missed it to further entice (and confuse) you, footage of Abrams talking about his new “Mystery Box” has shown up online. What is it? What does it have to do with Super 8? I guess we’ll see for ourselves soon enough as the trailer for Super 8 will be attached to Iron Man 2 this weekend.

  1. JJ is also working on a script which is going to be an homage to early Spielberg films and Spielberg himself is going to be attached as either advisor or executive producer. That one has me interested.

  2. The bigger question is: what does the plot entail. I figure the discovery is going to be something very creepy, but what would the entire arc concern? Would it be them trying to find the alien again? Would it be them dealing with the discovery? Or would the alien find THEM and do something nasty for being caught on film?

    I’m intrigued.

On that note… where’s my fucking Cloverfield sequel, Abrams?!
