Meyers Thinks Big for Hunters

David Meyers discusses Witch HuntersI guess it’s all right if you feel an overwhelming desire to sexify witches and try to give them a better film than, say, The Witches, or make them smarter and less annoying than those “Charmed” chicks. But reading director David Meyers (a music video helmer who’s making his debut with The Hitcher remake) discuss his next feature, Witch Hunters, it sounds like he may be going over the top.

“I have this Lord of the Rings sort of tale of witchery that redefines all the negative stereotypes of witches. It’s not a bunch of hags running around in black hats,” Meyers told IGN Filmforce recently. “It’s a much more epic tale of the dark ages. You’re traveling to fantastic lands. It’s at the scale of Pirates of the Caribbean, visually…a little bit of Raiders of the Lost Ark and a little bit of Star Wars, as far as the love triangles.”

Um… okay. How does that translate to a horror film? Well, to be honest I’m not sure that it does. In the brief article on Filmforce, Meyers references both Star Wars and Lord of the Rings numerous times, and states he hopes his story, set in the 1600’s but with a “fresh face”, will see a franchise built out of it. “The idea of it is it’s not hokey. It’s not The Wizard of Oz kind of witches. There’s sex appeal to the witches. Imagine Angelina Jolie as a witch that can do the types of shit that you see the wizard in Lord of the Rings doing. I don’t have the definition of what it is yet but it’s big.”

Like I said, still trying to see where the horror connection is here, but its obvious Meyers has something grand in mind so we’ll see how it turns out. Whether or not we ever see Witch Hunters will likely depend on how well The Hitcher remake does, which is out on April 13th of next year.
