Kevin Smith Talks More Red StateNow that director Kevin Smith has secured funding for his next film, his long talked about first foray into horror, Red State, we’re finally getting the details on what to expect from the flick, which begins shooting this August.

In an interview with Film School Rejects, Smith offered the following for rabid fans:

“It’s very reminiscent of Race with the Devil,” Smith tells FSR. “That’s such a favorite movie of mine. When I was a kid, it was just such a terrifying notion. It’s where you’re on vacation and you just happen to see some motherfuckers sacrificing a virgin, they kill your dog, and then chase you in your Winnebago. There’s nothing more horrifying than that! You can keep your fucking thirty-foot shark, that’s terrifying! It’s certainly not that, but it’s very much in that spirit of people in the wrong place at the wrong time. Instead of going with devil worship, we’re going the other direction. It deals with intense religious worship. It’s religious fundamentalism.

Red State is said to be inspired by a true case of terrifying extremism taking place in Topeka, Kansas. Specifically the Westboro Baptist Church.

Those who follow the news closely may be aware of the church, which is run by a man named Fred Phelps. He and his followers believe that homosexuality is the root cause of almost every single problem in American history, a belief that is conveyed through websites like GodHatesFags.com and GodHatesAmerica.com. Ironic that it’s really only in America that such a person would be able to freely express his admittedly idiotic and close-minded viewpoint and gain national attention because of it.
