Kevin Smith Talks More Red State

Kevin Smith Talks More Red StateNow that director Kevin Smith has secured funding for his next film, his long talked about first foray into horror, Red State, we’re finally getting the details on what to expect from the flick, which begins shooting this August.

In an interview with Film School Rejects, Smith offered the following for rabid fans:

“It’s very reminiscent of Race with the Devil,” Smith tells FSR. “That’s such a favorite movie of mine. When I was a kid, it was just such a terrifying notion. It’s where you’re on vacation and you just happen to see some motherfuckers sacrificing a virgin, they kill your dog, and then chase you in your Winnebago. There’s nothing more horrifying than that! You can keep your fucking thirty-foot shark, that’s terrifying! It’s certainly not that, but it’s very much in that spirit of people in the wrong place at the wrong time. Instead of going with devil worship, we’re going the other direction. It deals with intense religious worship. It’s religious fundamentalism.

Red State is said to be inspired by a true case of terrifying extremism taking place in Topeka, Kansas. Specifically the Westboro Baptist Church.

Those who follow the news closely may be aware of the church, which is run by a man named Fred Phelps. He and his followers believe that homosexuality is the root cause of almost every single problem in American history, a belief that is conveyed through websites like GodHatesFags.com and GodHatesAmerica.com. Ironic that it’s really only in America that such a person would be able to freely express his admittedly idiotic and close-minded viewpoint and gain national attention because of it.

  1. I’ll spread the same message here I spread everywhere Phelps comes up: there IS no Westboro Baptist Church. There may have been at one point, but no more. It’s an myth perpetuated by the Phelps family to give them some sort of legitimacy. Go to Topeka and you won’t find a Westboro Baptist. It’s a building in the neighborhood Phelps owns, it’s not open to the public, and the only ‘members’ are the Phelps family and some in-laws who married Phelps children.

    Just sayin’. :)

    • “Church” doesn’t always specifically refer to a building. In this case, as is the case with the term “the Roman Catholic Church”, it refers to the body of followers/believers.

So in that sense yes, there IS indeed a Westboro Baptist Church.

  2. God doesn’t hate fags. If he did his closest disciples alias Catholic Priests wouldn’t be fudge packing small boys.

Even the Pope is good with that.

And aren’t the leaders of one of the world’s most successful religions in close, personal contact with God? I mean they are eating his flesh and drinking his blood… obviously these guys are intimate. You don’t let just anyone drink your blood.

Consequently church doctrine must be: Violate small boys up the bum.

Even the Boy Scout leaders have picked up on God’s will.

    • ‘God doesn’t hate fags. If he did his closest disciples alias Catholic Priests wouldn’t be fudge packing small boys.’

      That’s an astonishingly ignorant statement.

In absolutely NO WAY should homosexuality ever be equated with child molestation.

      • I think he meant to infer that their repressed homosexuality has driven them to child molestation. I don’t agree that homosexuality should be compared to pedophilia, but in this instance involving the Vatican’s antiquated rules and whatnot, it tends to be connected in a sense. Even Bill Maher agreed to some extent in his show on HBO, recently.

“We are bad guys. That means we’ve got more to do other than bullying companies. It’s fun to lead a bad man’s life.”

      • What I’m saying is Catholic priests (who are men) regularly molest small boys.

If you’d like to ignore the massive weight of evidence and say this isn’t the case, feel free. The Pope will love you for it.

Truth is truth no matter if it’s politically incorrect or if you don’t like it.

        • I think it’s due to sexual repression and the fact that homosexuality is looked down upon. Not to mention abusing their power.

It is a fact that all priests who molest and rape boys are in fact homosexuals. It doesn’t mean there’s a direct link, but it is a fact, pure and simple.

I’m just amazed people still consider the pope a valid source of opinion and guidance after his attempts to protect these child molesting sons of bitches.
