At the end of April production kicked off for Starz’s upcoming “American Gods” series, but one key role is being recast and a new director of photography has come on board.  Read on to see who’s who as a result of the shakeup.

Per Deadline, the part of “Mad Sweeney” will be recast due to British actor Sean Harris leaving the project for personal reasons. Additionally, original director of photography Brendan Glavin has been replaced with Jo Willems, who previously worked with “American Gods” director David Slade on 30 Days of Night and the pilot for NBC series “Awake.”

“Sean Harris had to leave the ‘American Gods’ production for personal reasons,” series producer FreemantleMedia Media North America said in a statement to the site. “He is a very talented actor and we are sad to see him go but we wish him well. We are currently recasting the role of Mad Sweeney. Separately, we are thrilled to welcome Jo Willems as our DP. Jo and David Slade have had a long-standing creative partnership and have collaborated on various projects. The chemistry between a director and his DP are vital, and when Jo became available to join David on ‘American Gods,’ we jumped at the opportunity to have him on the team.”

Stay tuned for more as it comes!

The plot of “American Gods” revolves around a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity, and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities.

The cast includes Ricky Whittle as Shadow Moon, Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday, Emily Browning as Laura Moon, Yetide Badaki as Bilquis, Bruce Langley as Technical Boy, Crispin Glover as Mr. World, Jonathan Tucker as Low Key Lyesmith, Cloris Leachman as Zorya Vechernyaya, Peter Stormare as Czernobog, Chris Obi as Anubis, and Mousa Kraish as The Jinn.

“American Gods” is produced by FremantleMedia North America. Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal,” “Pushing Daisies,” “Heroes”) and Michael Green (“The River,” “Kings,” “Heroes”) are writers and showrunners. David Slade (“Hannibal,” The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) is directing the pilot and additional episodes. FMNA’s Craig Cegielski and Stefanie Berk are executive producing the series along with Fuller, Green, Slade, and Gaiman. Senior Vice Presidents of Original Programming Marta Fernandez and Ken Segna are the Starz executives in charge of “American Gods.”
