Screen Gems Intent on Making Slender Man a Horror Movie Icon

There are few Internet creations more genuinely terrifying than Slender Man, an inhuman creature dressed in a black suit and wearing a white mask who, according to legend, snatches up children and makes them do terrible things. He’s already a horror icon, more or less, but he’s now getting his own movie.

As reported by ComicBook.com, Screen Gems is actively developing a horror film based on the popular Internet meme, and the script by David Birke (Gacy, 13 Sins) is already complete. The studio is looking to begin production this coming fall on the Slender Man movie, and they hope to release it in 2017.

Per the website…

The character Slender Man was created in a Something Awful forum contest to make everyday photographs look supernatural when Eric Knudsen, posting as “Victor Surge,” posted two photos of children with an unnaturally tall, thin man behind them wearing a black suit. The character abducted children and influenced people to commit terrible acts, according to Knudsen’s lore. Other posters added to the character’s lore, leading to short films, video games, and pop culture references. The character has drawn similarities to entities such as “The Gentlemen” on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “The Silence” on “Doctor Who.”

Stay tuned for more.
