Sasha Grey Ventures to the Hallows

What pops into your head when I say that Sasha Grey has a new movie coming out? Either another pretentious Steven Soderbergh borefest or a porno flick where she’s choked out on a bathroom floor amidst a gangbang, right? There’s actually a third option today – one so crazy that it might just work.

HorrorSquad chatted with director Richard O’Sullivan, whose latest horror flick, Hallows, features Grey in what could be her most challenging role yet: a chaste Jesus freak!

Describing the film, the director said, “Hallows basically takes the standard kids-in-the-woods-running-from-a-killer genre and flips it on its ear. The deaths aren’t random. They’re not cookie cutter. Each character dies in a fashion relating to the way they live their life. I’m less interested in gore-for-the-sake-of-gore (although there is gore in this film and plenty of it) than the psychology behind the characters and how they react to what happens. That’s why we’re happy to be working with Sasha. She’s more interested in the psychology behind the action than just the action itself. That’s what she conveys in her work in the adult genre, and that’s what we’re going for in this film.

To further shake things up, O’Sullivan cast Christina Cupo, an actress who has strong ties to the Christian film community, as a heavily pierced and tattooed Goth girl with a penchant for rough sex.

    Silly boy, Sasha Grey was excellent in “The Girlfriend Experience,” and she has potential to be a decent actress. Pretentious borefest, hehehe. Did you even see “The Girlfriend Experience” or did you just throw out a wild assumption?

      For some reason, I watch every new Soderbergh movie – despite the fact that my stance on his work hasn’t changed in years.

      Even at 77 minutes, that movie had precious little to say.

      Nothing against Grey herself, but she’ll need a better platform than GFE to have a lasting career in the mainstream.

        I thought it had a lot to say about our perceptions of fantasies and reality, about what we look for in a sexual relationship and how alienated we are in the big city as is evident in the final scene where the Jewish pawn shop owner shivers at the mere touch of Grey’s body indicating his obvious longing for human affection and not so much sex. It’s one of the few Soderbergh films I’ve really enjoyed.

          Although Sex, Lies is easily one of my all-time favorite films, I haven’t really loved a Soderbergh movie since Traffic (has it really been 10 years already?) although I did enjoy Full Frontal and Solaris. He kind of put me off with how commercial he went with the Ocean flicks. Really need to find the time to watch both TGE and Che to see if he can rope me back in.

            Don’t let it put you off. Look at his career in the last 10 years or so. Him and Clooney have figured out the Hollywood system and are using it to their full advantage.

            Do a studio picture one year, make the studio a truck load of cash and they become very happy with him.

            Then ask to do a quieter, more art oriented film.

            I say good for them. It’s a good way to keep your name afloat and continue to make audience pleasing movies, and cinephile pleasing movies.

            Danny Ocean’s greatest con was getting people to show up to the same shit movie three times in a row.

            Clooney is one of the few actors in Hollywood to have kept his momentum in spite of starring in crap like those Ocean’s movies.

            Which is funny because Clooney could have had his career destroyed by Batman and Robin. Luckily he was able to get Out of Sight after that and then the Ocean movies.

            Buz he got so fucking lucky, it’s unbelievable. Any other person would have just faded away in to obscurity after that cinematic disaster. Now THAT was a cinematic abortion.

            But Clooney is an excellent actor and he gets shit done, even if he’s a bit preachy sometimes. Okay, he’s very preachy sometimes, but still he has the skills to back up his high and mighty act.

            Out of Sight is a great film and the book is even better. As far as Sasha Grey goes, never saw The Girlfriend Experience (probably should), but I’m curious about this one.

            I thought she was pretty good in it, but she was better in Face Invaders and Buttman’s Stretch Class 2.

            Aside from “The Girlfriend Experience” I have yet to enjoy a Soderbergh film. When he’s commercial he’s bland and when he’s indie he’s just awful. I mean look at “Full Frontal” for proof of that. Ugh.

          Actually, ‘pretentious borefest’ was pretty spot on. Either that, or ‘over-hyped mumblecore abortion’ …

          I’m convinced the only way anybody comes out of The Girlfriend Experience with anything good to say is having walked into that theater intent on loving the film, no matter what they were to actually see up on screen. It could’ve been “Waldo Watches Paint Dry For Two Hours and Twenty Minutes,” and those same people probably would’ve ranted and raved about it, praising it for its understatement, its ‘masterful subtlety’.

            In other words people who went in to theaters expecting to like it ended up liking it?

            There’s a difference between wanting to like something and expecting to like it. Expectation’s a little more neutral. Somebody can go into a film fully expecting to love the hell out of it, only to walk out completely disappointed, or even a little angry. Case in point: The Phantom Menace.

            Oh, fuck. I think I just dropped a logic bomb.

            Yeah, when all is said and done you’re still just not really convincing me that your argument is solid. I mean of course if people go in to a movie expecting to like it, might be disappointed, but what does that have to do with the movie itself?

            If you’re suggesting people just pretend to like the movie then you can say that about anything and anyone. Twilight fans might have gone in to the movie and liked it no matter what, Hatchet fans may go in to Hatchet 2 and like it no matter what. What does that even prove?

            And if you’re going to fall on that lame tactic that anyone who likes this movie is pretentious and just pretend to like it because they want to look more sophisticated or something then I think that’s an argument more worthy of the gang at IMDB or something. Yeah, someone is pretentious for liking a movie, that makes sense! Woo!

            Logic bomb defused. It’s okay people, it was just a dud.

            By the way did you watch the movie? Just curious. I want to hear what your thoughts. I personally liked Grey as the escort. She was quite good. I’m glad he went with a basic unknown instead of monkey lips Julia Roberts or someone equally annoying. I’m not sure I’m looking forward to her being a filmmaker. They premiered one of her short films on G4 and it was so amateur and laughable.

            Yeah, I saw it. I thought the whole thing came off like somebody’s bad student film. Although, I do have to give it up to Soderbergh for coming up with the idea of casting such obvious amateurs in all of the supporting roles, ensuring Grey, who seemed as if she didn’t even know where the hell she was half the time, would end up looking like a better actor by comparison. That was a stroke of genius.

    Marilyn Chambers was pretty good in Cronenberg’s RABID. Other than that, I don’t remember any porn actresses or actors (I’m looking at you, Ron Jeremy) ever doing a decent job in a regular film. Funny how directors can cross over all the time (some of the biggest names in the industry started out by shooting porn in the 70ies) but other talent not so much.
