With Toho’s feature film Godzilla Resurgence (aka Shin Gojira) set to open in Japan on July 29, 2016, co-director Hideaki Anno has purportedly announced that the studio has pitted the Big G against Mech Unit 01 of Anno’s 1990’s landmark Japanese animated series Evangelion, though the question looms: in what medium?

The official site for Toho’s Godzilla Resurgence was recently updated with the below promotional image, as was the official Evangelion site, the latter of which promises “the most maximum collaboration of 2016” between the iconic Godzilla and Neon Genesis Evangelion franchises.

Digging deeper, a visit to a sub-site  of Godzilla Resurgence features copy which reads The Savage God Vs. Giant Bio-Machine Mecha,” as well as an online store hocking Godzilla vs. Evangelion-branded swag (check out the image below).

Further, website Otakumode.com states that a Godzilla vs. Evangelion film is indeed in development at Toho and goes on to say, “What makes it even more exciting is that some of the best creators in Japan will be working on this movie. It was revealed that the movie visual was specially illustrated by famous anime director Maeda Mahiro, who also worked on Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo among other titles. Who will be next in building up hype for this much anticipated movie?”

For those unfamiliar with the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise, the 1990’s property was set in the year 2015, with the Earth under attack by entities known as “Angels.” In opposition to them stood NERV, a covert organization which funds the creation of giant bio-mech Evangelion units, piloted by Japanese teenagers.
