Warner Brothers Bringing Us Space Invaders: The Motion Picture

Warner Brothers Bringing Us Space Invaders: The Motion PictureWhat once was old is new again, at least as far as movies based on video games. Universal is developing an Asteroids movie. Fox is developing a Missile Command movie. Producers have been trying to get a big screen Joust and Pac-Man movie off the ground for years now. It really should not come as a shock to hear that the godfather of the arcade game, Space Invaders, may be on its way to a theater near you, courtesy of Warner Brothers.

The LA Times has the details on the possibility of a motion picture based on a 32-year-old video game based around a side-to-side scrolling tank firing vertically at a descending armada of alien warships.

“Warner Bros. is negotiating to acquire feature rights to the landmark shooter from Taito, the Japanese company that originally manufactured the game. If the rights issues all work out, the project would bring on Hollywood fixtures Mark Gordon, Jason Blum, and Guymon Casady as producers.

Gordon is a film veteran with experience at the big-budget art house (“Saving Private Ryan”) as well as the big-budget commercial (“The Day After Tomorrow”). Blum is best known for producing horror breakout “Paranormal Activity,” while Cassady is a manager-producer with a slew of high-profile clients.”

I think we can safely say that should this Space Invaders movie ever come to fruition, tremendous liberties will be taken with the property to mold it into something theatrical. Or they could just re-release Independence Day to theaters, change the title to Space Invaders, and see if anyone can tell the difference.

With any luck they’ll bust Buckner & Garcia out of mothballs to team up with Soulja Boy and Linkin Park to produce a kickass coin-op inspired soundtrack.
