DVD and Blu-ray Releases: April 5, 2016

default-featured-image

Well, folks, I told you we had some good stuff coming up; and I would never let you down, so let’s get right to it. First, there are a few minor discrepancies to address…

Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key may have had an early release date of October 27th but is definitely scheduled for this week to have a Blu-ray and DVD release. Also, Lust of the Dead 5 initially had a release date of April 5th but is now listed as unavailable. If you find a copy, you’re welcome. If not, I claim zero responsibility.

This is a great week for people who enjoy collections. Our Collections section this week has more than a hundred movie possibilities. What’s great is that a lot of them are classics as well. Names like Vincent Price, Leslie Nielsen, Jamie Lee Curtis, Lon Chaney, Jr., Anthony Perkins, and more show up below, so there’s bound to be something there that tickles your fancy.

This week also sees the second season of “Salem” dropping in our Television section. I was kind of into this show for a little while, but I lack the attention span to keep up with it in addition to other shows I’ve been watching. One day I plan on getting back into it because I thought it was pretty decent.

I’ve only just put a dent in the 27 releases this week so keep reading below. Also, the next couple weeks are still relatively stacked with releases, so be sure to keep checking back.

As usual, pleasant viewing.

The Black Cat (1980)

Black Cat, The (1980)

Starring:

Patrick Magee, Mimsy Farmer, David Warbeck

Synopsis:

From Italy’s own Godfather of Gore Lucio Fulci (Zombie, The Gates of Hell) comes The Black Cat, a gruesome reimagining of the classic Edgar Allan Poe tale starring Patrick Magee (A Clockwork Orange) and Mimsy Farmer (The Perfume of the Lady in Black).

When a young couple goes missing in a sleepy English village, Scotland Yard Inspector Gorley (David Warbeck, The Beyond) is brought in to assist on the case. But what starts off as routine investigation turns into a murder inquiry when the couple are found dead in mysterious circumstances.

Fusing a classically gothic atmosphere with the decidedly more visceral elements that are the hallmark of Fulci’s films, The Black Cat is a too-often overlooked and underrated entry in the Italian master filmmaker s canon.

Loosely based on Edgar Allan Poe’s classic tale The Black Cat , Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key, from director Sergio Martino (Torso), weaves the key motifs from Poe s gothic yarn into one of the most sensual films from the Golden era of giallo.

Luigi Pistilli (Milano Calibro 9, A Bay of Blood) plays writer Oliviero, an abrasive drunk who amuses himself by holding drunken orgies at his grand country manor much to the displeasure of his long-suffering wife (Anita Strindberg). Notable for giving screen starlet Edwige Fenech her first bad girl role, Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key, with its many unexpected twists and turns, is just as bewitching as its title would suggest.

Death Walks Twice: Two Films by Luciano Ercoli

Death Walks Twice Two Films by Luciano Ercoli

Starring:

Frank Wolff, Nieves Navarro, Simon Andreu

Synopsis:

Emerging at the peak of the giallo boom of the early 70s, Luciano Ercoli s Death Walks films are two superlative examples of the genre linked by their shared casting of the stunning Nieves Navarro (billed under her adopted stage name of Susan Scott) as the lead woman in peril.

In Death Walks on High Heels (1971), exotic dancer Nicole (Navarro), the daughter of a murdered jewel thief, finds herself terrorised by a black-clad assailant determined on procuring her father s stolen gems. Fleeing Paris and her knife-wielding pursuer, Nicole arrives in London only to discover that death stalks her at every corner.

Returning in Death Walks at Midnight (1972), Navarro stars as Valentina a model who, in the midst of a drug-fuelled photoshoot, witnesses a brutal murder in the apartment opposite hers. But when it becomes clear that the savage slaying she describes relates to a crime that took place six months earlier, the police are at a loss – forcing Valentina to solve the mystery alone.

Offering up all the glamour, perversity and narrative twists and turns that are typical of the giallo genre at its best, Luciano Ercoli s Death Walks on High Heels and Death Walks at Midnight anticipate the super-stylized trappings of Brian De Palma s early psycho thrillers (most notably, Dressed to Kill).
