Scorpion Releasing and Kino Lorber Re-Opening The Rift on Blu-ray this Summer

Fresh off the Blu-ray release of his magnum opus Pieces, Scorpion Releasing and Kino Lorber surprised everyone with word that they’re teaming up to bring Juan Piquer Simon’s obscure and underrated 1989 underwater creature feature The Rift to Blu-ray this summer.

Originally released in the US under the title Endless Descent, The Rift was one of a slew of B-movies produced at the time to capitalize on the release of James Cameron’s The Abyss. See also: Deep Star Six, Leviathan, Lords of the Deep.

The Rift stars Jack Scalia, R. Lee Ermey, Deborah Adair, Ely Pouget, and Ray Wise as crew members battling a slew of undersea creatures, most notably a giant man-eating starfish. We don’t get nearly enough films featuring giant man-eating starfishes.

Synopsis:
An experimental submarine, the “Siren II,” with a very experienced crew, is sent to find out what happened to the “Siren I,” which mysteriously disappeared in a submarine rift. Things go awry when they begin to find things that shouldn’t be there…

Yes – including a giant man-eating starfish! Did I mention the movie features a giant man-eating starfish?

No release date yet for The Rift Blu-ray or word of any disc extras, but we do know this will be a brand new HD master. The included artwork is also tentative; I really hope they stick with it because that DVD artwork is money, certainly better than any previous artwork for the film. However, I do prefer the original, more idiotic tagline “You Can’t Hold Your Breath & Scream at the Same Time.”

Next maybe we can get my favorite J.P. Simon flick, Slugs, some Blu-ray lovin’?
